LONG, WARREN H.  

Warren H. Long, 92, of Rockford, died Saturday, Dec. 28, 2013 at the Nora Springs Care Center.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 3, 2014, at the First Presbyterian Church, Odebolt, Iowa, with Pastor Kevin Freese officiating. Burial was in Odebolt Cemetery.

Warren Harding Long was born to Thomas and Susie Long at Fairland, Oklahoma. He graduated from Fairland High School in 1939, and from Miami (OK) Junior College in 1941. He worked for the War Department, Washington, DC. He was promoted and spent a year in the Panama Canal Zone. Back in Washington, DC, he enlisted in the US Army Air Corps. Following discharge, he again returned to Washington and volunteered to serve as a civilian employee of the War Department for 15 months in Korea. Upon his return to the states in 1947, he enrolled at Drake University in Des Moines, IA., earning a BA degree in Economics. He took the opportunity to take the tests for the US Border Patrol. He qualified and was called into service on July 29, 1949, reporting to the station in El Centro, California. During his career he served in 10 other stations, patroling our borders. He was on the B. P. Pistol Sharpshooter team for a number of years. At the time of his retirement on January 31, 1978, he had been elevated to the position of assistant regional commissioner of the Border Patrol which involved supervision of stations from Minnesota to the Pacific Ocean.

During the years at Drake University, Warren met his future wife, Grace Reuber, of Odebolt, Iowa. They were married in her church on Sunday, October 19, 1952, and celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary in 2013. Following Warren’s retirement, they built a home near Kearney, Mo., where they lived until moving to Rockford on December 10, 2008. Warren was an avid chess player and joined other opponents on Tuesday evenings in Kansas City, MO. He was sorry to be unable to find any people who shared his hobby in the Rockford area.

Warren is survived by his wife Grace; sister Vivian Linderoth, McMinnville, OR; sister-in-law Helen (James) Schumburg, Rockford; nieces, Veronas Closson, McMinnville; Colleen Ewing, Forest City; Sandra (Kyle) McGonigle, Des Moines; Janet Schumburg, Rockford; nephews Steven Schumburg, Cedar Falls, and Tom Linderoth, McMinnville; several grand nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother Thomas, Jr.; sister-in-law, Dorothy Higby; and brother-in-law, Ray Linderoth.


FREEMAN, ROBERT FRANKLIN     March 10, 1946 - December 16, 2013

Robert Franklin Freeman, 67, of Walker, MN, passed away unexpectedly Monday, Dec. 16, 2013 at his residence.

A memorial service was held Friday, Dec. 27, at Calvary Evangelical Free Church in Walker, MN with Pastor Mark Widman officiating. Arrangements entrusted to Northern Peace Funeral Home of Walker, MN.

Bob was born March 10, 1946 in Estherville to Paul and Wilda (Thomson) Freeman. He graduated from Cylinder High School in 1964. He attended college at Upper Iowa and Arizona State before returning home to raise his family and work with his father and brother at the Cylinder State Bank serving nearly 30 years in the third generation of family ownership.

Bob was united in marriage to his beloved Stephanie on April 7, 1990. After taking numerous fishing trips to northern Minnesota and Canada during their marriage, Bob and Steph started a new permanent chapter 'Up North' moving to Walker in 2000.

Bob was a devoted family man, with a never wavering commitment to his wife, children, and grandchildren. Through good times and bad, Bob was always there to help his family in any way that he could. He loved taking his grandchildren tubing and teaching them to fish, while driving and flying endless hours to attend their activities.

Bob was a committed outdoorsman, with a lifelong passion for fishing and hunting. He 'guided' his boat for friends and family and would always state 'you are only as good as your guide'.

His Christian Faith, church, and church family were also of the upmost importance to him. He made a difference in the lives of others through friendships, volunteering, and living by the golden rule of 'doing what is right'. Other special tenants of Bob include: his signature 'madbomber' hat every winter, endless games of cards especially 'pitch', a perfectly maintained and 'skunk free' yard, Iowa State decals on his always spotless vehicles, and absolutely no dirty dishes in the sink ever.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Wilda Freeman; brother, Paul Freeman; and his father-in-law, Stuart Currie.

He is survived by his wife, Stephanie; daughters, Robin (Kevin) Jackson, Andrea Jackson and Brette (Lamonte) Jefferson; sons, Daniel (Theresa) Etler and David (April) Etler; 13 grandchildren, Cole, Bailee, Trinity, Brynn, and Kira Jackson, Kylie, Chloe and Nate Jackson, Claira Jefferson, Madeline and Mason Etler, Emma and Austin Etler; sisters, Donna (Roger) Jensen, Margie (Arnold) Cody; sister-in-law, Nancy Freeman; brothers-in-law, Douglas (Mitzi) Currie and John (Laurie) Currie; and mother-in-law, Olympia Currie.


SMITH, BALLARD JAMES SR.     January 3, 1933 - December 12, 2013

Ballard James Smith, Sr.,  age 80, of Arthur, Iowa, passed away on Thursday, December 12, 2013 at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, of Omaha, NE.

Funeral Services were held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, December 16, 2013, at the Faith Bible Christian Outreach Center of Storm Lake, Iowa with Pastor Loren E. Carlson officiating. Graveside Services were held at 2:30 p.m., Monday, December 16, 2013 in the Ida Grove Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the McNamara-Moore Post No. 61 of the American Legion both of Ida Grove, Iowa. The Christensen ~ Van Houten Funeral Home of Ida Grove, Iowa was in charge of the funeral arrangements.
 
Ballard James Smith, Sr. was born on January 1, 1933 in Garrett, Kentucky to Lillie and Minnie (Stanley) Smith.

He attended school at Stone Coal in Kentucky and then enlisted into the United States Army, serving in the Korean War. After the war, Ballard married his sweetheart Paula Sue Pritchard on December 19, 1967. To this union 5 children were born, Ballard Jr., Susan, Valerie, Kimberly, and Brandon.

The couple made their home in North Judson, Indiana where Ballard worked in East Chicago for a steel mill for 32 years.  After retiring the couple moved to Arthur, Iowa where he became  interested and involved in the rental business.

Ballard always put church and God first. He also enjoyed fishing, working on houses, was an honest man of his word, and had a love for animals especially dogs. Ballard will be remembered for his kind and caring nature.  He enjoyed people and was always willing to help others.

Left to cherish his memory is his loving wife, Paula Smith of Arthur, IA, his 5 children, Ballard (Judy) Smith, II. of Ida Grove, IA, Susan (Monroe) Page, Big Rock, TN, Valerie (Ken) Simpson of Sac City, IA, Kimberly (Joseph) Menke of Battle Creek, IA, and Brandon Smith (Naomi Krapfl) of Defiance, IA. 10 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, step brothers, Walter Huff and Arnold Huff of Franklin Ohio, and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Ballard was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Charlene Smith, a brother, Jay Smith, 4 sisters, Betty Cunnigham, Geneva Turner, Gervie Combs, Dorsie Jorgensen.

Joan Frances (Kerkhoff) Tunink, age 82, of Odebolt, IA, passed away on Thursday, December 26, 2013 at the Horn Memorial Hospital, of Ida Grove, IA.
         
A Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, December 30, 2013, at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church of Ida Grove, Iowa with Father Richard D. Ball officiating. Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, December 30, 2013 in the St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery of Odebolt, Iowa. A Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a vigil service at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, December 29, 2013 at the Christensen-Van Houten Funeral Home of Odebolt. Tory M. Johannsen, age 43, of Storm Lake, Iowa died December 20, 2013 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake from a sudden heart attack.

Tory Michael Johannsen was born April 10, 1970 in Ida Grove, Iowa the son of Roger L. and Edna Mae (Kastner) Johannsen. On May 24, 1970 he was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Schleswig, Iowa and later confirmed on April 15, 1984 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt, Iowa.

Growing up, he attended school at Odebolt Arthur Community School where he graduated with the class of 1988. Following high school graduation, he attended Western Iowa Tech Community College in Sioux City, Iowa where he graduated in 1991.

Tory worked for IBP as a hog buyer for many years where he met the love of his life, Joni Franzmeier, who at the time was working in the Storm Lake IBP office. On August 8, 1992, they were united in marriage at the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. Together, they were blessed with four children: Chandler, Chance, Berkley, and Brogan.

Tory was a member of the Lakeside Presbyterian Church in Storm Lake. He also was very involved in Pheasants Forever and the Iowa Pork Producers Association.

Tory was an irreplaceable part of the Nutra Tech family for more than 15 years. He was a valuable business partner, a loyal employee, and most of all a treasured friend. Tory looked out for the underdog and always went to bat for others when times were tough. The mark he left on the company will never be forgotten. The gap he leaves in their hearts will never be filled.

Family was a very important aspect of his life where his wife, Joni, was his best friend and number one supporter. Spending time with their children meant the world to him. He thoroughly enjoyed attending any of his children’s activities, as he was their number one fan. Tory was an avid Iowa State fan and enjoyed attending football games with his daughter, Chandler. Tory loved the outdoors especially, hunting and snowmobiling with his son, Chance. He could fix anything and loved spending time in his shop where he often heard little giggles from his two littler helpers, Berkley and Brogan. A favorite pastime of his was landscaping where he treasured having his entire family around to help out. Tory will be remembered as a devoted husband, loving father, dedicated son, fun-loving uncle, and friend. He will be missed greatly by all who knew and loved him.

HENRICH, GRACE (GARDNER)        January 12, 1922 - December 21, 2013

Grace Henrich, age 91, of Odebolt, IA, passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013 at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake, IA. Grace Agnes Gardner Henrich was born on January 12, 1922 to parents Jacob and Edith (Westendorf) Gardner in White Lake, South Dakota. When Grace was eight, she and her family moved to Odebolt, IA where she received her schooling and graduated from Odebolt High School in 1942. She was a member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church and active in the ladies guild.

As Grace would say, “ I saw this man in church and knew I wanted to meet him” (William Henrich); once she decided this was a good thing, she married him, on June 30, 1942 at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt. They were blessed with four children: Renea, William, Theodore, and Jack. As a city girl transplanted to farm life, she had to learn how to cook and help with chores, including milking cows and thrashing hay. As Bill worked to build the farm, she worked hard to provide a loving home for her family. She was a life-long learner and set an excellent example for her children by purchasing National Geographic Magazine and encouraging them to achieve academic and athletic excellence. She appreciated the beauty of the farm landscape and took art classes to put her impressions onto canvas.

Grace loved to bake and was known for her excellent pies and cakes. Bill and Grace traveled throughout the country to visit children including California, Minnesota, Colorado, Hawaii and Switzerland. When younger, Grace and Bill were excellent dancers and were seen weekly at Lakewood, Cobblestone and polka dancing at Schleswig. They were a very handsome couple while “cutting the rug”. Grace loved to play cards, especially Pitch and Euchre, also Crazy Eight with the kids. Her life’s work was to raise a good family and she treasured the time she had with them. She will be dearly missed by her husband Bill, her children and grandchildren, extended family and all those who knew and loved her.

Grace will be greatly missed by husband William Henrich of Twilight Acres in Wall Lake, IA ; daughter Renea Bradley of Wayzata, MN; sons: William Jr. of Ankeny, IA, Ted (Kathy) Henrich of Wall Lake, IA, and Jack (Marj) Henrich of Odebolt, IA; grandchildren: Dr. Jennifer Smith of Chapel Hill NC, Veronica Stewart (Randy) of Wilmington, OH, Mathew Henrich of Nevada, IA, Justin Henrich of Iowa City, IA, Jay Henrich (Marcy) of West Point, IA, Jacob Henrich of Denver, CO, and Jonathan Henrich of Odebolt, IA; great-grandchildren: Emelia Grace Stewart and Logan James Henrich; brother Robert (Mary Ann) Gardner of Nevada, IA; sister in laws: Phyllis Gardner of Odebolt, IA and Darlene Bird of Odebolt, IA; and numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents Jacob and Edith, brothers Dale (Ruby) Gardner and Don Gardner; son-in-law Dr. Wayne Bradley and daughter-in-law Beverly Henrich.



GOOD, THOMAS JOHN          October 8, 1927 - December 4, 2013

Thomas John Good, the son of George Bernard and Theresa Helen (Weldon) Good, was born October 8, 1927 in Waveland Township near Griswold, IA and died December 4, 2013 at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, IA at the age of 86 years, 1 month, and 27 days.

Tom was raised on the family farm and attended Rosehill School for eight years. Tom’s Grandmother Rose had been named after this school. Tom served in the Army from January 7, 1955 until December of 1956. On April 12, 1986 Tom was united in marriage to Lyla Christensen Elmquist at St. Paul’s Church in Atlantic, IA. Tom farmed for 58 years until having a stroke in August of 2001. He continued to remain on the farm for the next eleven years, with the dedicated care of his wife, Lyla. Tom moved to Odebolt Nursing and Rehab in June of 2012. He lived there until the time of his death.

Tom was a true farmer, and loved everything about it. He enjoyed playing cards, visiting with friends, reading, and watching the History Channel.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother Joe Good and wife Marge; and his sisters: Frances Good, Agnes Good, Mary Jo Dermody and husband Phil, Ethel Hines and husband Paul, and Dorothy Stuvick.

Tom is survived by his wife Lyla of Odebolt, IA; his step children: Marsha Schaeuble and husband Terry of Odebolt, IA and their children: Desiree, Danielle, and Alex, Brian Elmquist and wife Jodie of Stanton, IA and their children: Dakota, Keaton, Jade, Paige, and Trey, and Rhonda Elmquist and her friend Jim Fleming of Denison, IA; and his brother-in-law Don Stuvcick of Norton, KS. Tom is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

Mass of Christian Burial was held on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at 1:30 PM at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in Griswold.    Interment was at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Neola. Duhn Funeral Home in Griswold was in charge of arrangements.


NEDDERMEYER, PHILLIP CHRISTIAN     February 25, 1923 - November 28, 2013

Phillip Christian Neddermeyer was born February 25, 1923, the son of Adolph and Eleanor Ullerich Neddermeyer. He passed away Thursday, November 28, 2013, at Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska, at the age of 90.

Funeral services were held 2 P.M., Monday, December 2, 2013, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, Iowa.  Rev. Kurt Kaiser and Rev. David Sewing officiated the service and graveside rites held at St. John's Lutheran Cemetery in Charter Oak, Iowa.  The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.

Phillip was born in Crawford County near Charter Oak, Iowa. He was baptized on April 1, 1923, by Rev. Amstein and confirmed on March 21, 1937, by Rev. Schroeder at St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. He received his education in the Charter Oak Community School through the 11th grade when he enlisted in the U.S. Army on February 10, 1943. He was a member of the Paratroopers during WWII and awarded a Purple Heart. On October 9, 1945, he received his honorable discharge. Phillip was united in marriage to Elva Mae (Pat) Baker on October 18, 1947. The couple made their home on an acreage near Charter Oak where they farmed and Phillip bought and sold cattle. They liked going to auctions and antiquing. After battling cancer, Pat passed away October 19, 1996. Phillip then moved to Odebolt, Iowa.

On April 19, 1998, Phillip married Arda Lee Zoch at Faith Lutheran Church in Odebolt. They moved to Denison, Iowa, and enjoyed going to dances in the area three nights a week for many years. Euchre, Pinochle, and Skip-Bo were some of their favorite card games they enjoyed in their spare time. Phillip was a life-time and dedicated member of the American Legion Homer Hall Post 66 in Charter Oak for 68 years. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Phillip was preceded in death by his parents; and his first wife, Pat. Survivors include his wife, Arda Lee of Denison; five stepchildren: Lesley Zoch and his wife, Kris of Haysville, Kansas; Steven Zoch and his wife, Gayle of Fairmont, Minnesota; Tommy Zoch and his wife, Dawn of Neola, Iowa; Deborah Smith and her husband, Lolane of Des Moines, Iowa; and Deniece Mattheis and her husband, Lynn of Aurelia, Iowa; 16 stepgrandchildren; 17 stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Norma Neddermeyer of Omaha, Nebraska; other relatives and friends.

MAPLES, DAVID CHARLES       December 1, 1918 - December 10, 2013

David Charles Maples, age 95, of Odebolt, passed away on Tuesday, December 10, 2013 at his granddaughter’s residence of Kingsley, Iowa.
          
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, December 14, 2013, at the New Hope Church of Moville, Iowa with Pastor Edgar Rodriguez officiating. Military Rites will be conducted at the church by the United States Army Reserve & the Wink-Sparks Post No. 303 of the American Legion of Moville, Iowa. Per his wishes, David’s body has been cremated. Burial will be held at a later date in the Odebolt Cemetery of Odebolt, Iowa. David was born on the farm on December 1st, 1918 in Odebolt, IA to David and Martha (Schnuckel) Maples. His mother passed away 3 days later due to complications of childbirth. David was then taken in by his Aunt Ida Mauer and Uncle Fred Schnuckel. He graduated from Odebolt High School. David (PFC) served for 2 years during WWII in the United States Army as a Heavy truck driver in the Aleutian Islands. He received an Asiatic Pacific Theater medal with 1 Bronze Star and a Good Conduct medal. Following his discharge from the Army, he went to school in Lake View, IA for Agriculture.

David and Lorraine (Albers) were united in marriage on October 23rd, 1957 in Worthington, MN. Together, they made their home on a farm east of Odebolt, IA. Lorraine brought 3 children to the marriage; Lonna age 12, Terry age 10 and Rick age 3. Together they had one child; Davett.

David farmed until his retirement. He also worked for the ASC office for many years.

His hobbies included trapping, bowling, fishing and he loved to play cards. David was a Lifetime member of VFW and the American Legion.

Left to cherish his memories are Lonna (John) Miller of Lawton, IA; Terry (Kay) Albers of Kuna ID; Rick Albers of Los Osos, CA; Davett (Dick) Riemenschneider of Pierson, IA. His grandchildren are Tracy (Jeff) Kunkel of Lawton, IA; Ryan (Angela) Albers of Nampa, ID; Tiffany (Brad) Schultzen of Bronson, IA; Kim Albers of Ventura CA; Nicole Benson of Rock Valley, IA; Rebecca (Chad) Parr of Kuna, ID; Denett (Josh) Ruring of Kingsley, IA; Shane (Amy) Miller of Lawton, IA and Joshua Albers of Kuna, ID. David is also survived by 19 great-grandchildren.

David was preceded in death by his parents; ex-wife Lorraine; cousins Marvin Mauer and Helen Oxendale.

BOERNER, GORDON        March 14, 1950 - December 4, 2013

Gordon A. "Gordie" Boerner, 63 of Coralville, formerly of Ida Grove and Odebolt, died Wednesday, December 4, 2013, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center in Cedar Rapids.

Services and visitations will be held in Iowa City on Saturday, December 7th. at the Zion Lutheran Church with visitation beginning at 9am with the services at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon. Additional services and visitation will be held in Holstein, IA on Monday, December 9th. at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, with visitation beginning at 9am with the services at 11 am followed by a luncheon at the church. Burial will take place at the Odebolt Cemetery. In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established to support that which was important to Gordie and his family. Gordon Allen Boerner was born March 14, 1950, in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Glenn H. and Mabel T. (Johnson) Boerner. Growing up in Odebolt he attended Odebolt-Arthur Schools graduating in 1968. He then attended and graduated from the University of Iowa in the College of Journalism in 1972. It was here that Gordie fell in love with the Iowa Hawkeyes, but more importantly he fell in love with his wife to be, Linda Bogue. He and Linda were married June 1, 1974, at the St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church in Holstein. After college, Gordie worked in the journalism field for the Iowa City Press-Citizen and KSIB Radio in Creston. After he and Linda were married they made their home in Ida Grove where they raised their family. Gordie's career involved Hi-Way Products and First State Bank both in Ida Grove, and the Swanson Insurance Agency in Odebolt. He retired and in 2011 he and Linda moved to Coralville to be nearer to their children and grandchildren, but also to be back with his beloved Hawks!

Gordie was an active member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church where he served on the church council, past board president and served numerous terms on the Horn Memorial Hospital Board in Ida Grove. He was a member or past member of Rotary, Kiwanis, Pheasants Forever, University of Iowa Alumni Association, the "I" Club, and since living in Coralville a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Iowa City. He was a people person. If you didn't know Gordie, that would change soon! He enjoyed golf, working outside in the yard, pheasant hunting, but most dear to him was his family. Gordie enjoyed his travels in life, whether it was with just Linda, or with Linda and the kids on their "Griswold" family vacations. He was there for his children growing up, and later when they had children of their own, he loved being grandpa!

His family includes Linda; their two children and spouses, Melissa and Joe Adrian of Richland, IA; and Brett and Missy Boerner of Urbandale, IA; grandchildren, Kaleigh & Kieran Adrian, and Brandon and Tyler Pedersen; Gordie's brother and his wife, Ron and Christy Boerner of Wamego, KS; his sister-in-law and her husband, Suzie and Mark Libbey of Minnetonka, MN; and his brother-in-law and his wife, Mark and Jacki Bogue of Ida Grove, IA.  Gordie was preceded in death by his parents, and an infant sister, Glennis Boerner.

McFARLAND, MIRIAM B.   January 7, 1968 - September 22, 2013

Miriam B. Mcfarland, 45, of Odebolt, Iowa, died  Sunday, September 22, 2013 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, IA.  Born January  7, 1968, Miriam was the daughter of Tillman and Henrietta (Nutzman) McFarland.

She graduated from Odebolt-Arthur Community School in 1986 and the New York Institute of Photography in 1988. She worked as a freelance photographer and alongside her companion and fiancé, Lyle E. Wiley (died in 2010) in their wood floor finishing business. Her photography won many awards and was the subject of several gallery exhibits in Iowa and Minnesota.

No memorial services were held.  Miriam desired that her body be donated to the University of Iowa in the hope that studying her various cancers might help find a cure.


WUNSCHEL, JACQUELYN P.    February 11, 1932 - November 5, 2013

Jacquelyn P. “Jackie” Wunschel, age 81, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Tuesday, November 5, 2013, at the Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Jacquelyn P. “Jackie” Wunschel was born February 11, 1932 in Onawa, Iowa to Paul and Nellie (Rolph) Scholes.

In her younger years she was raised on a farm near Blencoe, Iowa. During the war her family relocated to Washington for a year before moving to Arthur, Iowa, where her family ran Scholes Hardware store and she attended high school.

On May 11, 1948 Jackie eloped with Vernus Dean Wunschel and were married in Kansas City, Missouri. The couple made their home in Arthur. Jackie was confirmed into the Lutheran faith in Odebolt that same year. The couple was blessed with four children, Don; Vern; Jean; and Mark.

The couple then moved to Battle Creek, Iowa in 1962 and started an auto dealership, Midtown Motors, which they later expanded and moved to Ida Grove along with their family.

Jackie helped by keeping books, and occasionally driving a truck for their family business, until 1986. In 1990 Jackie started Nellie Anna’s Gift Shop in Ida Grove, which she ran until her stroke in October of 2012.

Jackie was very musically talented and played the harp, organ, and trumpet.  She also loved to travel and went to China, Mexico, Spain and Hawaii. Jackie enjoyed staying in her cottage in Lake View during the summer months, along with crocheting, blankets; doilies; and hot pads; playing cards; and loved to play competitive games.



Jackie was very proud of her heritage and she enjoyed creating a family tree to follow her ancestry throughout the years.



Left to cherish her memory are her four children, Don (Peggy) Wunschel of Ida Grove; Vern (Jan) Wunschel of Ida Grove; Jean (Charlie) Rohlf of Ida Grove; Mark (Theresa) Wunschel of Ida Grove; 12 grandchildren, Kriss (Pat) Phillips; Matt (Chris) Wunschel; Donavon (Chris) Wunschel; Aaron Wunschel; Amber (Jed) Swanger;   Adam (Sarah) Wunschel; Cole Wunschel; Andi (John) O’Connor; Brandi (Chad) Sharkey; Danny ( Fiancé Javen) Wunschel; Aaron (April) Mahr; and Sarah (Michael) Billigmeier; and 22 great-grandchildren and 2 on the way; 1 great-great grandchild, sister, Ruthie (John) Tollakson of Sheridan, Wyoming; as well as many nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, and numerous friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Vernus Wunschel, parents-in-law Louis and Marie Wunschel, and son-in-law Mark Friedrichsen.

Edward "Ed" Boyd Skaren was born on April 10, 1944 in Arthur, Iowa to Eldred and Dorothy (Riley) Skaren.

He attended Arthur Public School and later graduated Odebolt- Arthur Public School in 1961. He then married the love of his life Marilyn Kaye Streck on August 27, 1961 at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ida Grove Iowa. The couple was blessed with two children, Teresa and Tracy.

Ed was baptized as a young adult into the Lutheran faith at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa and then later confirmed. Ed loved to sing praises to his Lord and was an active member of the adult choir at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

He enlisted in the Army National Guard From 1963-1968 and was called to active duty in 1968 and was stationed in Colorado for 6 months before returning home to Arthur.

Ed was a jack of all trades he worked as a mechanic, salesman, and logistics coordinator. During his retirement he drove the SRTS bus part time. In his spare time he enjoyed pheasant hunting, deer hunting, reading and watching old movies.

Ed was an active member of the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Ida Grove, a volunteer on the Arthur Fire Department and Emergency Medical Responders, and a member of the McNamara-Moore Post No. 61 of the American Legion.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Marilyn Skaren of Arthur, Iowa, his two children, Teresa Skaren-Gryder of Sioux City, Iowa; Tracy (Jeri) Skaren of Odebolt, Iowa; 7 grandchildren, Nicole, Rand, Tory, Tim, Ethan, Stormy, and Jerico, 9 great- grandchildren, sister, Ardis (Jim) Brownlee of Sioux City, Iowa; brother-in-law, Kenneth Streck of Ida Grove, Iowa; sister-in-laws, Martha Skaren of San Angelo, Texas, LaVonne (Don) Murray of Ida Grove, Iowa; Mary Streck of Allen, Texas; numerous nieces and nephews, his faithful companion (black lab) Sadie, and a host of friends and relatives.

Linda Ella Schoeberl was born on July 10, 1944 in Odebolt, Iowa to William (“Doc”) and Mabel (Fritz) Schoeberl. Linda graduated from Odebolt-Arthur High school in 1962 and went on to attend college at Morningside College before she transferred to Indiana University where she majored in music and French horn performance  graduating in 1973.

She performed at the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado during the summers in the 1970’s.

Linda enjoyed playing piano, bingo, 500 and other card games and in her spare time drawing and sketching, at the Ellen’s, Greenleaf, and  Villa Care Health Centers in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

Linda is survived by many cousins and friends.

Emma (Whalen) Babcock-Meyer, age 82, of Odebolt, IA, passed away from an extended illness, Alzheimer's, on Saturday, November 2, 2013 at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, IA.

Emma Whalen was born on October 27, 1931, in Sac City, IA, to Bartley and Katherine (Bechler) Whalen. She graduated from Sac City High School in 1950. Emma was united in marriage to Austin Babcock on June 4, 1950, in Sac City. This union was blessed with five children: Rick, Becky, LuAnn, Cindy, and Marilyn.

Emma was a great mother and grandmother. She loved attending family events, gardening, sewing, knitting and making quilts for her grandchildren’s graduation gifts. She also worked as a cook at school. Austin passed away on August 14, 1971. Emma later married William Meyer, Jr. on October 5, 1996 in Odebolt, IA. He passed away February 16, 2013.

Emma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Odebolt where she served as a Deacon and was a member of the Eastern Star.

Carol Carlson was born on September 13, 1917 in Gregory, South Dakota to Otto and Mabel (Larson) Ford.  She graduated from high school and attended one year at Grand Island Business College. On September 1, 1940 she married Vetus William Carlson. The couple made their home on a farm north of Odebolt, IA. They were blessed with two children a son V. William (Bill), and daughter Cleone.

Carol enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, and crafts of all kinds, which her children and grandchildren have enjoyed throughout the years. She was a 4-H leader for many years. Carol took great pride in her grandchildren and attended many school activities and sports. She was a faithful member of Bethel Lutheran Church of Kiron and was dedicated to the Lord.

Boyd Imhoff was born August 1, 1934 in Moorehead, Iowa to Francis Boyd and Irene Martha (Trickel) Imhoff. He attended Des Moines Township School in Rolfe and graduated. After graduation Boyd enlisted in the United States Army and was stationed in Greenland.

When he returned home Boyd married Nancy A. Brabec on February 8, 1964 and they made their home on a farm South East of Pocahontas, Iowa.  The couple was blessed with three children Wayne, Joel, and Mark. In 1970 the couple moved to Odebolt, Iowa, where Boyd worked for the elevator for a short time, but he truly enjoyed trucking and hauling and went back to trucking. 

Boyd owned his own trucking business named Boyd Imhoff Trucking. He traveled all over the U.S.A. delivering heavy construction equipment.  In his down time he collected, tinkered, and restored antique tractors, and enjoyed going on annual tractor rides. Boyd also took pleasure in gardening and having coffee with friends

Survivors include his loving wife Nancy Imhoff of Odebolt, IA, children, Wayne (Stephanie) Imhoff of Ames, IA; Joel (Heather) Imhoff of Ames, IA; Mark (Donna) Imhoff of Ames, IA, grandchildren, Anna and David Imhoff; Colin and Sarah Imhoff; one brother, Gary (Betty) Imhoff of Lohrville, IA; three sisters, Karen (Bob) Speich of Algona, IA; Pat (Denny) Hovinga of Laurens, IA; Linda Bethune of Storm Lake, IA.

CURRIE, ROBERT JON "OSH"     April 22, 1940 - August 20, 2013

Robert Jon “Osh” Currie, age 73, of Schaller, Iowa died Tuesday, August 20, 2013 at the Buena Vista Regional Medical Center in Storm Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services for Robert Currie were held 10:30 a.m. August 24, 2013 at Schaller Presbyterian Church in Schaller, Iowa.  Interment was August 24, 2013 at Schaller Cemetery in Schaller, Iowa.

Robert Jon “Osh” Currie was born April 22, 1940 in Schaller, Iowa the son of Robert Malcolm and Lois Irene (Suiter) Currie. He was baptized on June 15, 1941 and confirmed on April 5, 1953 at the Presbyterian Church in Schaller.

Growing up, he attended school in Schaller where he graduated from Schaller High School in 1959.

On January 25, 1969, Bob was united in marriage to Joyce Konradi at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt, Iowa. Together, they were blessed with two children: Jason Jon and Randy Lee.

Bob spent his working career as a farmer. He had a love for the land and enjoyed driving around looking at the crops. In his spare time, he loved visiting the shop to visit his son, Jason and traveling to Boone to see Randy. Working on the farm and spending time in his shop repairing and building things was a favorite of Bob’s. He also enjoyed fishing. Family was a very important part of Bob’s life. He treasured spending time with them, especially his granddaughter, Kaitlyn.

Margie B. Lippincott was born on November 23, 1922 on a farm North East of Odebolt, to Jesse B. and Grace O. (Lincoln) Thevenot.  In 1925, the family moved to a farm five miles north of Arthur in Silver Creek Township.  She attended Silver Creek #7 school through the 6th grade and went on to graduate in 1940 as valedictorian of her class at the Arthur High School.

Margie met Cleo C. Lippincott and they were united in marriage on March 14, 1942 in Maryville MO.  When Cleo was drafted into the army, Margie joined him at Ft. Belvoir, VA, and Camp Kilmer, NJ, working in the service club cafeteria in both camps before Cleo went overseas on March 4, 1943. During Cleo’s tour of duty, Margie worked at Union Pacific in Omaha and Pratt and Whitney in Kansas City.  When Cleo returned in November, 1945, they lived briefly in Kansas City before returning to Iowa where they were blessed with two daughters, Mary Ellen and Jean Ann.  They lived in both Arthur and Ida Grove before building and moving into their home in Arthur in 1955.

Margie is well remembered for her 10 years as a hot lunch cook at the Arthur School. She then worked as a bookkeeper at the Arthur Lumber Co. before being employed as a deputy auditor in Ida Country where she worked for 20 years before retiring in 1986.

Margie was a long time member of the Arthur United Methodist Church where she held several offices on the board and was active in the UMW. She was also a member of the Arthur City Council, Arthur Community Board, and the Library Board.

A loving wife, devoted mother, and a treasured grandmother and great-grandmother, Margie’s first love was always her family.  Throughout her life, she lived one day at a time, greeting each new day with a positive attitude, boundless energy, and faith.  She enjoyed fishing trips to Minnesota, South Dakota, and Canada.  She loved being outdoors in her flower and vegetable gardens, but she also loved cooking, especially baking pies for her family and for neighbors and fundraisers.  She made all guests to her home feel special with her decorating touch and her plentiful tasty treats. Margie also enjoyed playing cards, watching the Cubs, and trips to the casinos.

Margie was preceded in death by her loving husband of 55 years, her parents, one sister; Mildred Noll, and one brother; Chester Thevenot.

SCHRAMM, ALICE (SCHULTZ)    January 13, 1919 - September 30, 2013

Alice Charlotte Johanna Schramm, age 94, of Odebolt, IA, passed away on September 30, 2013, at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center.

Alice was born January 13, 1919 on a farm in Otter Creek Township, Crawford County, IA, the daughter of Walter and Emma (Johansen) Schultz. Alice was baptized March 23, 1919, at Stockholm and was confirmed at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Denison, IA on March 29, 1934. She graduated the 8th grade from District No. 2 Otter Creek on August 18, 1933. She quit her education to help on the farm and later went to work for Mr. & Mrs. John Noyd where she met her husband Fred.

Alice was united in marriage to Fred Schramm on March 18, 1941. To this union two sons were born: Kenneth and Lloyd. She helped with the farming in the Odebolt Arthur area until they retired to Odebolt in 1988. Alice also enjoyed going dancing, playing cards and fishing. She belonged to the Birthday and Happy Hour Club. Alice is the last Charter Member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her sons: Kenneth and Beth Schramm of Odebolt and Lloyd and Carol Schramm of Arthur; five grandchildren: Tommy Schramm, Tammy Lindner and Tanya and David Pierce all of Odebolt; Amy and Roger Lansink of Odebolt; Alan and Brenda Schramm of Deloit; two step-grandchildren: Dennis Anderson of Texas and Travis Anderson of Aurelia; 15 great-grandchildren; 4 great-great-grandchildren; sisters: Velma Siebrecht of Odebolt; Ruby (Clarence) Friedrichsen of Kiron; and Verna (Mervin) Petersen of Odebolt; sister-in-law Florence Schultz of Odebolt; many extended family members and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband Fred; her parents; sisters: Dorothy Schultz and Erma (Clarence) Bielenberg; brothers: Fred Schultz and Irvin (Lavaughn) Schultz; brother-in-law Albert (Fern) Schramm. 




GUNDERSON, ZOLA H. (BRUCKER)      May 05, 1916 - September 25, 2013

 Zola Henrietta Gunderson, age 97, of Odebolt, IA, passed away on Wednesday, September 25, 2013, at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center.

Visitation: Sunday, 4:00-7:00 p.m., September 29, 2013 at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Odebolt, IA.  Funeral Service: Monday, 2:30 p.m., September 30, 2013 at United Methodist Church, Odebolt, IA.  Interment: Following the service September 30, 2013 at Odebolt Cemetery.

Zola was born at home in Blaine Township, Ida County, IA, to Lewis and Ida (Bair) Brucker on May 5, 1916. They lived near Arthur and Odebolt while Zola was young. She attended Country School through the eighth grade and Arthur High School grades nine and ten. Because of her mother’s illness, Zola had to quit school and stay home and work. She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Odebolt.

On August 2, 1937, Zola was united in marriage to Edward Gunderson. This union was blessed with four daughters: Junith, Josephine, Janice and Jean. Zola loved caring for her family and her home. Through her lifetime she enjoyed bowling, dancing, gardening, knitting, crocheting, and playing cards. Zola wanted to learn new things all her life. She organized a Kitchen Band in which she did the Charleston; she learned to knit in her 30’s, took swimming lessons in her 40’s, learned to play bridge in her 50’s and took organ lessons in her 60’s. She was a wonderful mother, who cherished her family and loved spending time with all her grandchildren. She will be dearly missed.

Survivors include her daughters: Junith Comstock of Denison; Josephine (Jerry) Warren of O’Fallon, IL, Janice Ahrens of San Antonio, TX, and Jean (Gene) Kelly of Odebolt; ten grandchildren: Dan Comstock, Steve Comstock and special friend Cheryl Rath, Doug (Christi) Comstock, Jeff Warren, Jana (Vern) Tucker, Chrisy (Said) Hanbaly, John (Shellie) Ahrens, Nancy (David) Bauman, Kyle Kelly and Kara Kelly; seven great-grandchildren: Kaylee, Tyler and Jacob Comstock, Ashley (Chris) Medders, Jake Tucker, Emma and Ben Hanbaly; three great-great-grandchildren: Nathan, Carson and Ella Medders; sisters-in-law: Mary Corrin and Irene Dodders; many nieces, nephews and extended family members.

DETERMAN, KATHLEEN (LANDGRAF)    October 15, 1921 - September 13, 2013

Kathleen (Kay) Determan, 91, Wall Lake, Iowa, formerly of Early, passed away September 13, 2013, at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Early, with the Rev. John McGuirk officiating. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a rosary at 7 p.m., at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home, 1120 Main Street, in Sac City, Iowa.

Kay was born October 15, 1921, in rural Odebolt, the daughter of Albert and Pearl (Dinges) Landgraf. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt. After attending Catholic and public schools in Odebolt and Early, she graduated from Odebolt High School in 1939. She then attended to Buena Vista College for normal training. She taught in rural schools in Sac County for two years.

At the age of 21, Kay was diagnosed with tuberculosis and was hospitalized in Oakdale, Iowa for two years. During the long stay, Kay was engaged to Urban Determan and waited for him while he served in World War II for three years. With her health back and Urban home from the War, Kay joined Urban in marriage on October 23, 1945 at Sacred Heart Church, Early. They made their home on their farm in rural Early. They welcomed four children: William (Bill), Rosemary, Steve and Jan.

Kay took pride in keeping an orderly home and caring for her family. She always grew a large garden and canned its bounty each summer. She enjoyed sewing for her home and her daughters and patched many jeans for her husband and sons. In 1983, Urban and Kay moved into Early for their retirement years. She was a member of Sacred Heart Church and Guild and the Neighborhood Coffee Club. Her family and her faith were her passions. Together, she and Urban enjoyed going to dances and traveling. They toured many states in the U.S. and took a trip to Europe. Some of her hobbies and activities were limited with the diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease over 30 years ago. Kay’s love of shopping and fashion were not curtailed even when she traveled by her wheelchair. She loved the shopping trips with her daughters and could still find the bargains. She was an avid reader including teenage fashion magazines so she knew the latest trends. Kay also enjoyed playing bridge with friends and 500 in their couple’s card club. The last nine years Kay’s home has been Twilight Acres, Wall Lake and their staff became part of her extended family. She never complained about her health or her wheelchair.

Survivors include: son Bill and wife Susan of Sioux City; daughter Rosemary Groteluschen and husband Roger of Marshalltown; son Steve and wife Barb of Early; daughter Jan Burhop and husband Kirby of Schaller. Twelve grandchildren: Billie Determan, Louisville, KY; Barry Determan and wife Traci, Shawnee, KS; Dr. David Groteluschen and wife Caitlin, Green Bay, WI; Jennifer August and husband Jason, Marshalltown; Mark Groteluschen and wife Mackenzie, Cedar Rapids; Beth Sheets and husband, Cameron, West Des Moines; Andy Determan and fiancée Sally Gelven, Kansas City, MO; Dan Determan, Orlando, FL; Kourtney Determan, Washington, DC; Karl Burhop, Leavenworth, KS; Vince Burhop and fiancée Greta Hagen-Richardson, Iowa City; and Alex Burhop, Schaller. Eight great-grandchildren: Ashlie Determan; Ayla, Emory, and Willem Groteluschen; Landry and Jefferson August; Harper and Ezra Groteluschen. She is also survived by her brother George Landgraf and wife Margaret, Odebolt and sisters Dorothy Mae Blass, Sac City; Barbara Faber, Spencer; Jean Jackson, Davenport; Helen Eckerman and husband Paul, Conrad; Lois Kipf and husband Roger, The Villages, FL and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding Kay in death were her husband, Urban; her parents, Albert and Pearl Landgraf; her sisters Mildred Olberding , Marilyn Fitzgerald and infant Mary Ann Landgraf; her sisters in law Dorothy Landgraf and Rita Tiefenthaler; her brothers in law Raymond Blass, Norman Olberding, Bernard Faber, Don Jackson, Robert Fitzgerald and Elmer Tiefenthaler. 


FLYNN, PATRICK "PAT" LEE   March 17, 1954 - September 3, 2013

 Pat Flynn, age 59, of Des Moines, IA, formerly of Odebolt, IA, died at his home in Des Moines on Tuesday, September 3, 2013.

Memorial Services will be held Saturday, September 07, 2013, 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Odebolt.  Visitation will be Friday, September 6 from 5-7:00 p.m. at Farber & Otteman Funeral Home, Odebolt, IA.

Patrick Lee Flynn was born on March 17, 1954, to William Robert and Anita (Schroeder) Flynn in Stewartville, MN. He was baptized at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stewartville and confirmed in Christ at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt. Pat graduated from Odebolt/Arthur High School with the class of 1972 and continued his studies at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake.

Pat was united in marriage to Nancy Bielema in 1974 at the Wall Lake Presbyterian Church. This union was blessed with four children. Pat then married Peg Harrington and they were blessed with a daughter.

Pat always looked forward to spending time with his children and attending their activities. He loved going fishing, hunting pheasants and deer, slow pitch softball, golfing, bowling, boating, watching the Vikings games, and was an avid sports watcher. He will be remembered for his quick wit, his knowledge of trivia, and love of cars. He will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

Survivors include his children: Shawn (Melissa) Flynn and their children Jaron and Karli of Wall Lake; Nathan (Natalie) Flynn and their children Nickolas, Naomi and Nash of Mt. Vernon; Derek (Holly) Flynn and son Noble of Cedar Rapids; Lindsay (Jeff) King and their children Kamryn and Reagan of Wall Lake; and Annie Rae Flynn of Storm Lake. Services for John R. “Jack” Williams, 87, of Odebolt were Aug. 16, 2013, at First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. The Rev. Mark Volkers officiated, with burial at Odebolt Cemetery in Odebolt. Military honors were conducted by Roose Post No. 313 of American Legion. Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt was in charge of arrangements.

He died Aug. 13 at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

Born Feb. 28, 1926, in Ida Grove, John R. Williams was the son of John H. and Gladys P. (Nelson) Williams. He graduated from Odebolt High School in 1943.  On Oct. 8, 1950, he married Mertie Logan Bell in Aurelia. One son, Michael H. Williams, was born to this union. Jack served his country in the U. S. Air Force from 1951 to 1955.

Jack was a farmer, raising purebred Angus cattle for many years. One of Jack’s fondest memories was of a steer from his herd that was grand champion at the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago in 1961. He was active in 4-H and showed many award-winning club calves.

Survivors include his wife, Mertie; a son, Michael H. Williams, of Kenosha, Wis.; a brother, Charles (Barb) Williams, of St. Paul, Minn.; a sister, Beverly (Bob) Leahy, of Cedar Falls; two nieces; and two nephews.

OLSON, JANICE K. (HORTON)         October 21, 1952 - July 31, 2013

Janice K. Olson, 60, of Emerson, NE, died on Wednesday, July 31, 2013 at home surrounded by her family. Memorial Services will be held Monday, August 5, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Emerson, NE; Father Gerald Leise will be officiating. The visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. Munderloh-Smith Funeral Home of Emerson, NE is in charge of arrangements.

Jan was born October 21, 1952 in Sac City, IA the daughter of Eldon and Arline (Beach) Horton. After graduating from High School, Jan attended Stewarts Beauty School in Sioux City, IA. On July 20, 1974 she married Andrew Olson in Odebolt. To this union four children were born: Ryan, Tricia, Laura and Clint. Jan owned and operated the Hair Locker for several years in Emerson. She was a member of the Altar Society, founding member of Three Counties That Glisten, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Jan also enjoyed crafting, decorating, family, camping, and spending time with her grandchildren.

Jan is survived by her husband Andy, two sons Ryan Olson of Seattle, WA and Clint “Rocky” (Renee) Olson of Lawrence, KS; a daughter Tricia (Chad) Luber of Emerson, NE, four grandchildren: Cade, Carter and Ava Luber and Corbin Olson, mother Arline Horton of Odebolt, IA, three sisters: Susan Horton of Sac City, IA, Nancy (Richard) Hitchcock of Tampa Bay, FL, and Mari (Al) Rico of Orlando, FL, a brother Bill (Myra) Horton of Sac City, IA, and many nieces and nephews.

Jan is preceded in death by her daughter Laura, her father Eldon Horton, and a sister Beverly Horton.


BENGFORD, KENNETH A.                  October 14, 1929 - July 1, 2013

Kenneth A. Bengford (1929-2013) passed away July 1st at his home in South Pasadena, California.

Ken was born October 14th 1929 in Odebolt, Iowa. His father, Bernard, was a WWI veteran who died of pneumonia in 1938, the day before Ken would make his First Communion. He was raised by a single mother in a humble two-story home with thirteen children during the Great Depression.

Ken was a student-athlete (football) at Morningside College in Sioux City, Iowa, where he played for revered coach, George Allen, who would later coach the Washington Redskins. Ken was the 1951 Defensive MVP of the now dissolved North Central Conference, but never told his children this.

He served domestically in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, both in New Mexico and at Fort Bliss in El Paso Texas. He was a lifeguard at Fort Bliss and studied nuclear detonations in the deserts of New Mexico.

Kenneth was a high school teacher for the Los Angeles city schools for thirty-five years, both at Eagle Rock and Hamilton High School, respectively. Subjects taught included History, Career Planning, and Driver's Education. Ken taught and coached high school football early on in Three Rivers Michigan and enjoyed coaching Little League Baseball in South Pasadena for many years.

He met Kathryn Ann (Daily) Bengford of Spencer, Iowa and they married in 1957 and raised six children in South Pasadena. Both had advanced degrees, Ken in Physical Education and Ann in Nursing.

Ken's hobbies included: planting and grafting fruit trees, raising fruits and vegetables (especially grapes and tomatoes), keeping bees, playing the Button Box Accordion and listening to polka music, bridge, philosophy, classical music, reading, saying hi to folks, and learning how to fly a Cessna at the El Monte Airport. Disciplined, caring, and thrifty, he awoke at 5 a.m. one Sunday per month to buy boxes of produce for the family at the Downtown L.A. industry farmer's market.

He loved working each summer at the Catholic Daughters of America "Teresita Pines Camp" for girls near Wrightwood, CA in the Angeles Crest National Forest. Beloved as "Mr. Ken" by the campers and counselors, he once bought some seventy campers pizza when the food for their overnight camping hike was soiled in transport.  He also enjoyed walking his faithful dog "Bogy" around the public library and up Meridian Ave. in South Pasadena.  He was a great Dad and friend and his children never lacked.

He is survived by his children Patrick Joseph (Krista Hass) and their children, Mario, Matthew, Anne-Marie and David; Michael Anthony "Tony", Catherine Ann (John Moss) and daughters Natalie "Tally" and Marie; Christopher Dailey (Katie) and son Bradley Patrick; Phillip James and Timothy John.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Kathryn Ann (Daily) May 27, 1998.

Services were held at Holy Family Parish in South Pasadena on Monday July 8th at 10:00am.


O'CONNOR, NONA MAE (SCHROEDER)  October 9, 1923 - June 12, 2013

Nona Mae O’Connor, age 89, of Wall Lake, IA passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.

Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, June 17, 2013 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Wall Lake, IA, followed by interment at Wall Lake Cemetery.

Nona Mae Schroeder was born on October 2, 1923 in Arcadia, IA to parents Frank and Louise (Aschinger) Schroeder. She was raised on a farm south of Odebolt, IA and attended elementary school at St. Martin’s Catholic School. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1940.

Nona Mae married John “Joe” Heidenreich on September 23, 1952 in Wall Lake. They were blessed with two children: Holly and Joe. Joe passed away in 1954, Nona Mae married Bert O’Connor on June 12, 1965. Nona Mae gained six step-children with this union: Tom, Gail, Kitsy, Joni, Jeani, and Roseann.

Nona Mae, Holly and Joe lived in Wall Lake with her parents until moving to Carroll from 1962-1965 where Nona Mae worked at the Carroll County State Bank. They moved to Sac City in 1965 and Nona Mae became a full-time homemaker. She loved spending time with her birthday club “girls”, playing golf and bridge, dancing, and traveling. She was an active member of St. Mary’s parish, and a volunteer at the Sac City Library and the Loring Hospital. She loved spending time with her children and grandchildren. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and loved her.

STICKROD, JACK                                June 5, 1923 - June 9, 2013

Jack Robert Stickrod, age 90, of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away on June 9, 2013, at home. Jack was born June 5, 1923, near Wall Lake to Henry and Carrie (Wilken) Stickrod. He was baptized in 1923 and confirmed in 1939 at Peace Lutheran Church. He attended Levey #2 country school through 8th grade and graduated from Odebolt High School in 1940. After graduation, he worked with his father in the farming operation.

Funeral services for Jack Stickrod were Wednesday, 10:00 am, June 12, 2013 at Peace Lutheran Church, Wall Lake, IA.  Interment was held following the service at Wall Lake Cemetery, Wall Lake, IA.

Jack was called into the U.S. Army in February 1946, serving time in Japan. He was discharged in 1947 and resumed farming with his father on the family Century Farm, raising purebred Shorthorn cattle and Chester White hogs. He played semi-pro baseball with the Lakes team in the late 1940’s.

On June 5, 1950, he was married to Marjorie Hopkins at Peace Lutheran Church, Wall Lake. Three sons were born to this union: Dean, David, and Dan. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and enjoyed watching sports (especially baseball) on TV. Jack was very involved in community affairs. He served as Levey township clerk from 1967 to 1996. He served on the Wall Lake School Board for 12 years, the Sac County ASCS committee, and on the Corn Belt Telephone board. He was active at Peace Lutheran Church, holding various offices, teaching Sunday School for 25 years, and singing in the church choir for over 60 years.

Jack is survived by his wife, Marjorie of Wall Lake; three sons, Dean (Jane) Stickrod of Eldora, IA; David (Amy) Stickrod of Glenwood, IA; and Dan (Barbara) Stickrod of Odebolt, IA; grandchildren: Brian (Veronica) Stickrod of Spencer, IA; Jill (Spencer) Smith of Huxley, IA; Carrie Stickrod of Glenwood, IA; Christian Stickrod of Iowa City, IA; Brenda (Jamie) Schoneboom of Wall Lake, IA; Jeff (Lexsea) Stickrod of Bellevue, IA; Joel Stickrod (and fiancée Andrea Miller) of Nashville, TN; Jennifer Stickrod of Indianola, IA; John Stickrod of Wall Lake, IA; and Brent Stickrod of Odebolt, IA; great-grandchildren: Connor, Madison, and Hannah Stickrod; Chloe and Landon Smith; Preston Lester; Hudson Stickrod; and Mason and Christopher Schoneboom; one sister Ann (Dean) Einspahr of Appleton, WI; and one brother-in-law, Ross Hopkins of Grundy Center, IA; and many nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

COMSTOCK, MERRITT J.               November 16, 1930 - June 2, 2013

Merritt Jacob Comstock was born November 16, 1930, the son of Geary and Elizabeth Segebart Comstock. He passed away Sunday, June 2, 2013, at the Eventide Lutheran Nursing Home in Denison, Iowa, at the age of 82.

Merritt was born in Denison, Iowa. He received his education in rural schools near his home. After he finished his schooling, Merritt ran a bulldozer for Ted Staples’ Construction Company. In July 1951 Merritt joined the U.S. Air Force and served his country during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged in July 1955. On September 18, 1956, Merritt was united in marriage to Junith Gunderson at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Storm Lake, Iowa. The couple made their home near Arcadia and were blessed with the birth of three sons. Merritt worked for Green Construction Company and then a tile company from Lake View. He then bought his own truck and hauled milk, going from cans to bulk, picking up milk from farmers and delivering to the creamery. Merritt farmed from the early 1960s to mid 1980 when he retired.

Merritt was a quiet and gentle man. He took great care of his livestock and liked working with cattle in particular. He collected classical farm tractors. When he had spare time, he enjoyed fishing in the local farm ponds, going dancing, and listening to country music. He and Junith were long time members of a card club in their Odebolt neighborhood. Merritt loved spending time with his grandchildren and would help out when they needed to be picked up from daycare and school. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Denison.

Merritt was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters: Ruby Herrmann; Jean Deppe; and Lucille Vetter; and one brother, LeRoy Comstock. Survivors include his wife, Junith; three sons: Dan Comstock; Steve Comstock and special friend, Cheryl Rath; and Doug Comstock and his wife, Christi; all of Denison; three grandchildren, Tyler, Kaylee and Jacob Comstock; his mother-in-law, Zola Gunderson of Odebolt; one sister-in-law, Sharon Comstock of Arthur; and one brother-in-law, Duane Vetter of Denison; other relatives and friends.

Dorothy Elaine (Nagel) Rienfeld was born June 11, 1928, at Battle Creek, IA. She was the daughter of Milton and Jeanette (Stoneberg) Nagel of Odebolt, IA. Dorothy lived on farms; first north of Arthur, IA, and then south of Arthur with her parents, and attended country grade schools. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1945. After graduation she worked at Union Pacific Railroad Headquarters in Omaha. Later in life she attended Western Iowa Technical College in Sioux City. Dorothy's career was in retail sales and real estate. She was a real estate broker with Washburn W. Steele Realty of Cherokee.

Dorothy was married February 1, 1946, to Ralph D. Neville at Sac City, Iowa. To this union was born three daughters, Dorothy Elaine, Dawn Marie, and Vicki Lynn. She married R. Dean Rienfeld on November 15, 1975 at Sioux Falls, SD.

Dorothy was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Spencer, and attended First Church of Christ in Cherokee. She was a past officer of Local 179 Union Auxiliary of Cherokee, United Counties Board of Realtors and Multiple Listing Service. She was a special correspondent for the Daily Reporter of Spencer and the Daily Times of Cherokee. She was a past hostess for the Welcome Wagon Organization of Cherokee.

Dorothy passed away at the Cherokee Regional Medical Center on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, having reached the age of 84. She was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter, Vicki Neville, her husband Dean Rienfeld, a brother-in-law, Vernon Rienfeld, and an aunt, Nellie Stoneberg.

Survivors include 2 daughters, Dottie (Lee) Hecht of Rochester, MN, and Dawn Killmer of Bella Vista, AR; 6 grandchildren: Tod, Scott and Paul Hecht, Nicole Liebman, Chantel and Regan Killmer; 7 great-grandchildren, Jacob, Eliana, and Russell Liebman, Shasta, Sitka, Sebastian and Benjamin Hecht; sister-in-law, Bonnie Siltman; cousins, Viola (Bill) Carlson, Muriel Erickson, and Lorraine Hanson nieces and nephews and many friends.



FLINK, LUCILLE (LINDE)        April 18, 1925 - May 30, 2013

Lucille Anna (Linde) Flink, passed away on Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Twilight Acres Nursing Home in Wall Lake.   Services will be 10 a.m. Monday, June 3rd at First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt. Burial will be in Westside Cemetery, Westside, Iowa. Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Farber and Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt. 

Lucille was born April 18, 1925 to Eddie and Anna (Weber) Linde at Westside, Iowa in Carroll County. Lucille was baptized as an infant in the Wheatland Presbyterian Church in rural Breda, Iowa. She attended country school Arcadia Township of Carroll County and graduated from Westside High School in 1941.

After graduation, Lucille was associated with the local Westside newspaper and helped on her parents farm north of Westside, which is still the Linde homestead. Lucille also enjoyed church work in her mother church of Wheatland. She attended Sunday School and later taught Sunday School, served as an officer in the Ladies Group and served as church organist for many years. On April 25, 1944, Lucille was united in marriage to Earl F. Flink of Wall Lake. The couple was married at Wheatland by Rev. H.A. Smidt. The couple lived on a farm until 1953 when they moved to Westside. Lucille and Earl joined the Westside Presbyterian Church (now the United Church). Lucille was a member of the church’s Mother’s Club and served in the capacity of several offices and was active with Vacation Bible School and also served as assistant organist. In 1960, the family moved to the Odebolt area and became members of the Odebolt Presbyterian Church where Lucille served as a Trustee and two terms as an Elder. She was also a member of Presbyterian Women (PW). Lucille was actively involved in the ORNC (formerly Colonial Manor) Auxilliary, serving as President.

Lucille loved her family and enjoyed making a home for them. She was a master cook and baker who was famous for her pie. She loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren – they were the apple of her eye and she enjoyed everyone and helping where she could. Lucille loved music, especially Gospel music, needlework and reading. She collected snowmen and cat figurines.

Her husband Earl passed away April 4, 1984, a few years after moving into their new home on Dewey Street in Odebolt. She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers Harrold Linde and Kenneth Linde, oldest son Larry, a grandson-in-law Tyler Johnson, two nephews Kevin and Allan Linde, nieces Cathy Linde and Mary Kay Schnell and sister-in-law Louisa Linde.

Lucille is survived by her children, Judith (Arlin) Bunge of Wall Lake, Keith (Joyce) Flink of Odebolt, Nancy Flink of Odebolt, Steve (Deborah) Flink of Odebolt, Randy Flink of St. Louis, MO. Her grandchildren, Crystal Bunge of Wall Lake, Todd (Tam) Bunge of Hawarden, IA, Jeana (Chris) Boyd of Clive, IA, Justin (Amy) Flink of Herriman, UT, Jory Flink of Sioux City, IA, Andrea Johnson of Bettendorf, IA and Brady (Stephanie) Flink of West Des Moines, IA. Great-grandchildren Nathanael, Jakob and Mikhel Bunge, Carter and Haley Boyd, Austin Flink, Hunter and Brooklyne Flink and Aidan Johnson. A sister-in-law, Darleen Linde of Westside and many nieces and nephews.




SIEBRECHT, LOIS (BENTSEN)      July 29, 1927 - May 28, 2013

Lois Siebrecht, age 85, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Tuesday, May 28, 2013, at Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center in Odebolt.

Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 31, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes.  The Reverend DeeAnn Klapp will officiate, with burial in the Odebolt Cemetery.  The family will greet friends on Thursday from 5-8 p.m. at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt.  In lieu of flowers, memorials in Lois’ name may be directed to the family.

Born July 29, 1927, in Sac County, Iowa, Lois Irene Siebrecht was the daughter of Albert J. and Hazel (Birkley) Bentsen.  She grew up in the Sac City and Nemaha areas, graduating from Sac City High School in 1946.  Lois earned her teaching certification from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, then taught rural school west of Sac City for several years.

 On January 21, 1951, she was united in marriage to Lloyd J. Siebrecht in Sac City, Iowa.  The couple made their home north of Odebolt where they farmed for many years, retiring to Odebolt in 1980.  They were blessed with five children, LaDon, Loren, Lester, Linda, and Lisa.

Lois was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school for many years.  She belonged to United Methodist Women and Ingleside Club as well as several card clubs through the years.  Lois enjoyed tending her yard and flowers and played her home organ for her own entertainment.  A talented cook, Lois delighted in cooking for her family, never using a recipe.  Her greatest joy, however, was found in her children and grandchildren.

Survivors include her children, LaDon (Linda) Siebrecht of Odebolt, Loren (Anita) Siebrecht of Carroll, Lester (Linda) Siebrecht of Odebolt, Linda Kemper of Nebraska City, NE; and Lisa (Leroy) Bartels of Tecumseh, NE; nine grandchildren, Jon Siebrecht of Odebolt, Vicki (Chad) Smith of Wayne, NE, Jeff Siebrecht of West Des Moines, Mike Siebrecht of Hamden, CT, Kyle Siebrecht of West Des Moines, Jenny (Josh) Burgett of Cedar Rapids, Jodi (Ross) DeVolder of St. Paul, MN, Lena Kemper of Omaha, NE, and Connor Bartels of Tecumseh, NE; four great-grandchildren, Allison Siebrecht, Blake and Colton Smith, and Tate Burgett; a brother, Ronald (Marlene) Bentsen of Sac City; and many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Lloyd in 2005; and a brother and his wife, Lawrence and Elaine Bentsen.




GRONEMEYER, P. DALE          February 19, 1923 - May 28, 2013

Paul Dale (P. Dale) Gronemeyer, age 90, passed away on Tuesday, May 28, 2013 at the Odebolt Nursing and Rehab Center in Odebolt, Iowa.

Mass of the Christian Burial will be held at 10:00am., Saturday, June 1st, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt with Father Richard Ball officiating.  Inurnment will be at St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery with presentation of the flag by the American Legion Post No. 313 of Odebolt.  Vigil services will be at 5:00pm, Friday May 31st, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church with a Celebration of Life from 5:30 to 8:00.  The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home of Odebolt is in charge of arrangements.

Dale was born in Odebolt, Iowa, on February 19, 1923, the son of Paul Jacob (P.J.) Gronemeyer and Irene Hulda (Freese) Gronemeyer. Dale graduated from Odebolt High School in 1940 after spending his entire youth in Odebolt. After a short time working in an aircraft factory in Baltimore, Dale enlisted in the Navy on December 8, 1942. In the Navy, Dale served on the USS Topeka, being discharged on April 6, 1946. One of the highlights of Dale’s time in the service was to be one of the first ships to bomb the mainland of Japan at the end of World War II. After the war, Dale returned to Odebolt, where he began his career in construction.

On December 27, 1949, Dale was united in marriage to Marjory Zane Belt at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Auburn. They were blessed with three children: Steven Dale, John Todd, and Sue Zane. Dale and Marge raised their families and retired in Odebolt.

Dale believed strongly in supporting local businesses and the community. As a businessman, he and others sponsored an annual watermelon feed and fireworks on the 4th of July and he contributed regularly to community projects. In addition to his monetary support, Dale often donated his construction talents and time to work on community projects.

Dale and Marge enjoyed visiting many countries around the globe and opened their home to four foreign exchange students as well. Dale liked to hunt and fish, garden, build, do crossword puzzles and watch nature. He served on the Sac County Conservation Board for several years, continuing to give of his time and effort for extra projects that helped to beautify Sac County.

Dale is survived by his son, Steven Dale Gronemeyer and his wife Mary of O’Fallon, MO, and their children, Melody Moore, Ben and Gabe Gronemeyer; his son, John Todd Gronemeyer of Jewell, IA; his daughter, Sue Beers and her husband Richard of Jewell, IA, and their children Paul Beers and wife Shelley and Callie Zane Stein and her husband Kevin. Dale is also survived by his six great-grandchildren: Trevor, Austin, Jaiden, Kadon, Carly, and Rhyan. Other survivors include his sister, Marion Ries of Denison, IA; sister-in-law Dolores Gronemeyer of Ames, IA, and brother Donald Gronemeyer of Odebolt, IA. He is also survived by many extended family members, including their four foreign exchange students: Martine, Celso, Otavio, and Mala.

Dale was preceded in death by his wife, Marjory Zane; his father Paul Jacob (P.J.) Gronemeyer; his mother, Irene (Freese) Gronemeyer; his father-in-law, Floyd Belt; his mother-in-law, Ruby Coyne; his step mother-in-law, Ethel Belt; his stepmother, Leota Gronemeyer; two brothers, Lyle Gronemeyer and Tom Gronemeyer; two brothers-in-law, John Hunt and Donald Ries; and his sister-in-law, Ruth Gronemeyer.


SCHWALLER, DANIEL R.   September 7, 1961 - May 25, 2013
Daniel Schwaller, age 51, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska.
           
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes.  The Reverend Richard Ball will officiate, with burial to follow in St. Martin’s Catholic Cemetery, Odebolt. 

Visitation will be held 4-8 p.m. Tuesday with a Scripture Service at 7 p.m. at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt.  In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society. 
           
Born September 7, 1961, in Carroll, Iowa, Daniel Robert Schwaller was the son of Robert and Nacy (Lamaack) Schwaller.  He grew up and received his education in Odebolt, graduating from Odebolt-Arthur Community Schools in 1981.  Dan continued farming with his father west of Odebolt.  In the early years he milked cows and continued raising stock cows, many of which became pets with the nurturing care he provided.
           
On May 31, 1986, he was united in marriage to Linda Kruckenberg in Lytton, Iowa.  Dan raised his two step-children, Clint and Amy, as his own.
           
An avid Green Bay Packers fan, Dan also enjoyed cheering on the Sioux City Bandits, John Wayne westerns, and anything John Deere.  He was always ready to lend a helping hand to neighbors and friends and was an active member of St. Martin’s Catholic Church.
           
Survivors include his wife, Linda; two children, Clint Werkmeister and Amy Werkmeister, both of Odebolt; a brother, Douglas (Barb) Schwaller of Atlantic; three sisters, Theresa (Grant) Berglund of Omaha, NE, Elizabeth (Mike) Simon of Odebolt, and Marilyn (Keith) Carter of Holstein, many nieces, nephews, and grand-nieces and –nephews; other extended family members and friends; as well as his faithful dog, Buddy.

LINDSTROM, VELMA M.                October 4, 1921 - April 25, 2013

Velma Marie Margurete Lindstrom was born in rural Ida County on October 4, 1921 to Marvin and Caroline (Kahl) Hollander. She was baptized and confirmed at Friedens Evangelical & Reformed Church in Schleswig, Iowa.

Velma received her education in rural school Hayes #8 in Ida County. After 8th grade graduation she helped her parents on their farm in Ida County. She often referred to herself as her dad’s “hired man”.

On March 28, 1941 she married Don Lindstrom at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They lived around rural Kiron until Don was drafted into the Armed Services, serving 2+ years in the Air Force. During this time Velma (with 2 small children) lived with Don’s sister Vivian, and her small child in Kiron.

Upon Don’s return from the service, they purchased a service station that they operated for 35 years. They eventually expanded, adding a repair shop, tank wagon service and car dealership. Velma handled the bookwork for the businesses as well as raising their three children, Jerry, Pat and Jim.

Don and Velma spent most of their lives living in Kiron, supporting the community. They did a lot of traveling during their retirement years.

Velma was active in many different organizations: the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary, White Cross and Women’s Missionary Society at First Baptist Church, St. John’s Bible Study, Red Hat Society, Sewing/Quilting Group, TOPS, Coffee Club and serving on the Election Board. She enjoyed playing cards with her Rummy Royal group and the Friday Date Night suppers at the café in Kiron. Visiting and traveling with her children and grandchildren was a great form of entertainment and she was always on the go, putting lots of miles on her Buick. Doing hand embroidery work and quilting alone or with friends produced many lovely keepsakes.

Velma passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Denison, IA. At the time of her death she had been blessed with 91 years, 6 months and 21 days.

Preceding her in death were her husband Donald Lindstrom, siblings Milda Hollander, Virtus Hollander, Vera Baker and Verna Johnston, and grandson Parker Getter.

Survivors include three children: Jerry (Jean) Lindstrom, Davenport, IA., Patricia (Jerry) Getter, Corning, IA., Jim (Marsha) Lindstrom, Kiron, IA.; sister-in-law Eleanor Lindstrom, Kiron, IA.; brother-in-law Dennis Lindstrom, Mesa, AZ., grandchildren: Kimberly Lindstrom, Davenport, IA., Kristine (Paul) Stevenson, Clear Lake, IA., Michael Getter, Tyler Roberson, Tampa, FL., Jerad (Jacie) Getter, Silver City, IA., Angela (Brad) Horsley, Overland Park, KS., Allison Lindstrom, Council Bluffs, IA., great grandchildren: Noah and AJ Stevenson, Parker, Will and Molly Getter, Morgan and Maddie Horsley, Shailey Hurley; several nieces and nephews as well as numerous friends in Kiron and surrounding communities.

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, April 29, 2013, at First Baptist Church, Kiron, Iowa with Pastor Bruce Kaihoi officiating.

Music for the service included soloist Jane Gronau singing “His Eye Is On The Sparrow” and “Precious Lord, Take My Hand” with congregational hymns of “Leaning On The Everlasting Arms” and “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”. Mrs. John W. Larson served as accompanist.

Honorary Pallbearers were The Friday Night Group and Pallbearers were Michael Getter, Tyler Roberson, Jerad Getter, Brad Horsley, Rodger Larson and Paul Stevenson.

Interment was at Kiron Cemetery, Kiron, Iowa. Following the gravesite rites and burial the family invited everyone to join them at the church for fellowship and a luncheon provided by Lidderdale Catering and First Baptist Social Committee.

HINK, BERNADINE (ROEDER)         March 17, 1916 - May 7, 2013

Bernadine Caroline (Roeder) Hink, age 97 of Wall Lake, Iowa, passed away on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at Twilight Acres, Wall Lake, Iowa.  Bernadine was born on March 17, 1916 in rural Odebolt, Iowa, the daughter of Joseph and Rose (Klemm) Roeder.  She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith in St. Martin’s Catholic Church, Odebolt, Iowa.

After her marriage to Francis P. Hink on February 3, 1937, at St. Martin’s Catholic Church in Odebolt, they farmed in the Odebolt and Wall Lake area.
    
Bernadine had two loves.  God and her family.  Going to mass, saying her “bucketful” of prayers every day, and spending time with her children and grandchildren meant everything to her.  She crocheted many many afghans in her retirement years giving them away as presents at Christmastime.  She had a green thumb when it came to gardening and growing African Violets, and was a wonderful cook.  She and Francis belonged to the same supper/card club for over 40 years.  Even in her nineties, it was tough to beat her at cards.  She will be missed by all who loved her.
    
Survivors include her children: Donna (Lee) Funke of Des Moines, Washington; Pauline Vauble of Sac City, Iowa; Frank (Margaret) Hink of Albuquerque, New Mexico; Mary Jane (Don) Oxendale of Odebolt, Iowa; and Richard (Carol) Hink of Ankeny, Iowa; nine grandchildren: Anna Homes, April Wright, Kelli Bellcock, LaVern Vauble, Brian Vauble, Jeffrey Hink, Dan Hink, Steve Hink and Eric Hink; 12 great-grandchildren; two step great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.  Other survivors include her sister Julie Henry of Corona, California; many nieces and nephews and extended family members and friends.
    
Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents; husband Francis Hink; brother Anthony Roeder; sister Dorothy Drilling; infant sister Evelyn Roeder; and son-in-law Robert Vauble.
    
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held on Friday, May 10th at 10:30am, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Wall Lake with Father John McGuirk officiating.  Burial will follow at the Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home.
    
Visitation is from 5-7:00pm, at the Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Wall Lake with a vigil service at 7:00pm.



BELSTENE, HAZEL (ENG)       August 27, 1909 - May 5, 2013

Hazel Belstene, age 103, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Sunday, May 5, 2013, at Morningside Care & Rehab Center in Ida Grove, Iowa.
           
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 14, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes.  The Reverend DeeAnn Klapp will officiate, with burial to follow in the Odebolt Cemetery.  Visitation will be held Monday from 4-7 p.m. at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt.
          
Born August 27, 1907, in Hayes Township, Ida County, Iowa, Hazel Cecelia Belstene was the daughter of Alfred and Beda (Skager) Eng.  She attended country school and graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1927.
           
Hazel taught school in Grant and Hayes Townships for four years.  She was baptized and became a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Arthur.  Hazel later joined the Baptist Church where she taught Women’s Sunday school and served as Sunday school superintendent.  On September 28, 1980, she joined the United Methodist Church in Odebolt. In earlier years she was active as WMS president and secretary, Deaconess, and communion steward.
           
Hazel was united in marriage to Earl Belstene on August 31, 1933, at the Baptist parsonage in Arthur, Iowa, by Reverend A.W. Ericson.  The couple lived on the farm until 1961, then made their home in Odebolt.
           
Survivors include a son, Eldon (Shirley) Belstene of Arthur; a son-in-law, Norman VanHouten of Omaha, NE; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; and 7 great-great-grandchildren.
           
She was preceded in death by her husband Earl in 1978; her children, Audrey Steuk, LaVon VanHouten, Larry Belstene, and an infant son; a grandson, Bradley VanHouten; four brothers, Carl, Clarence, Harry, and Elmer Eng; and an infant sister, Mildred.

FIEBELKORN, RICHARD            March 17, 1946 - February 17, 2013

Memorial services for 66-year-old Richard Fiebelkorn of Panama City, Florida, formerly of Odebolt, will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, April 20 at the Huebner Funeral Home in Denison with inurnment at the Crawford Heights Memory Gardens in Denison.  The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison is in charge of arrangements.  There is no visitation.

Richard H. Fiebelkorn was born March 17, 1946, the son of Agustuf and Mary Hanson Fiebelkorn. He passed away in Hospice Care in Panama City, Florida, on Sunday, February 17, 2013, at the age of 66.

Richard was born in Gregory, South Dakota. He received his education in the Gregory Community Schools graduating with the class of 1964. Richard was united in marriage to Lucille Ladehoff on June 14, 1969 and to this union was born three children.

Richard was an outdoors person and he loved to fish, hunt, and garden with his wife Lucille. He raised rabbits and attended rabbit shows with other competitors. Richard was an avid reader, having read many books, and liked listening to music and going dancing.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Kristina Lynn; two sisters, Judy and Alice; and one brother, Arthur.

Survivors include three sons: Richard and his wife, Stacy of Sac City, Iowa; James and Dennis Fiebelkorn, both of Odebolt, Iowa; four grandchildren; his former wife, Lucille of Odebolt; three sisters: JoAnn Jackson of Guthrie Center, Iowa; Dorothy Schnider and her husband of Omaha, Nebraska; and Susan Walker of Panama City, Florida; other relatives and friends.


TURNER, MARGIE A. (TEAQUIST)    March 12, 1926 -  April 24, 2013

Margie A. Turner, 87 of Lincoln died April 24, 2013.  

Margie was born on 3/12/26 to George & Lydia (Turin) Teaquist in Ida County, IA.

Margie was a long time member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Lincoln

She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and infant son and her husband, Robert.

Survivors include her children, Richard (Deanna) Turner of Lincoln, David (Denise) Turner of Indiana, Chuck (Cathy) Turner of Lincoln; Sister,  Jane (Phil) Ashby of New Mexico;  grandchildren, Amber (Bradley) Wilber, Tonee (Greg) Girdis, Ryan (Beth) Gould, Leslie and Phil Turner; along with 4 great grandchildren and many nieces.

Elsa K. Diersen, age 95, of Kiron, Iowa, died Thursday, April 11, 2013, at Twilight Acres in Wall Lake, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 15, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes.  The Reverend DeeAnn Klapp will officiate, with burial to follow in the Odebolt Cemetery.  Visitation with the family present will be held on Sunday from 4-7 p.m. at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt.

Born February 18, 1918, near Boyer, Iowa, Elsa Katharina Anderson was the daughter of Paul and Esther (Frey) Anderson.  She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1936, then earned her Normal teaching certificate.  Elsa taught in rural schools until her marriage to Earl Herman Diersen on September 6, 1940, in Wall Lake, Iowa.

The couple made their home with Earl’s parents for a time, farmed near Schaller, then purchased their home farm near Kiron in 1944.  Here they raised their family of four children, Janet, Alice, Gene, and Don.

A true farmer’s wife, Elsa worked alongside her husband and participated in every aspect of farming, proving herself to be an invaluable helpmate.  She was a faithful member of the United Methodist Church in Odebolt where she taught Sunday school for decades and also helped teach confirmation classes.  She will be remembered for her thoughtfulness, always writing cards and letters to family and friends.

Elsa enjoyed fishing, especially with her grandchildren, taking family vacations, and playing cards with the Friendly Farmers Pinochle Club.  In later years, she and Earl made countless woven rag rugs on their loom.

Survivors include four children, Janet Christiansen of Fonda (and friend Jim Pemble), Alice (Jerrold) Jimmerson of Manson, Gene (Sheryl) Diersen of Odebolt, and Don Diersen (special friend Kathy Pope) of Kiron; 14 grandchildren; 27 great-grandchildren; a sister, Irene Olson of Odebolt; two sisters-in-law, Loretta Anderson of Boyer, and Marie Diersen of Schaller; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Earl on April 12, 2008; a brother, Roscoe Anderson; a son-in-law, Richard Christiansen; and two brothers-in-law, Lake Olson and Kenneth Diersen.      



PROCHNOW, SHIRLEY DEAN        March 24, 1927 - February 23, 2013

Shirley Prochnow died on February 23, 2013 in Galveston, Texas as a result of complications from heart surgery in early January.   A memorial mass was celebrated at Holy Cross Church, Deerfield, Illinois at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 9.

Shirley was born to Ralph and Alice (Clifford) Dean on March 24, 1927, in Carroll, Iowa.  She spent her early years in Herring, Iowa where she attended Levey No. 8 country school. She graduated from Odebolt High School in 1945.  Upon graduation, she and a life-long friend, Joyce Schwaller of Odebolt, went to Omaha to work, first in retail and then in insurance.  In 1950 she moved to Chicago where she met Robert Prochnow. They were married in 1952. Shirley and her husband Bob lived in Texas and Missouri before moving to Deerfield, Illinois in 1958. Deerfield was their family home until 2012 when Shirley moved to Galveston, Texas.

Shirley lived her life to the fullest. She liked horse racing, Deerfield, Hawaii and almost any activity that involved being with family and friends, especially St. Patrick's Day festivities. She was definitely a "people" person who acquired friends and stayed in touch with them throughout her life.

She and Bob were blessed with four children, all of whom survive: son, Robert (Bob) Prochnow and wife Kate of Dellwood, Minnesota; son, Charles (Chuck) and wife Janine of San Jose, California; son, Donald (Don) of Lake Bluff, Illinois; and daughter, Trisha and husband Steve Flores of Dickinson, Texas. Shirley's delight was her five grandchildren-Steve, Sarah, Angela, Charlie and Josie. She is also survived by a sister, Betty Dean Oswald and her husband Charles of Mapleton, Iowa and ten loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents, Ralph and Alice Dean; her sister, Dorothy and husband Norman Hoft; and a brother-in-law, Charlie Hyman.

PINNEKAMP, MERLE         March 28, 1952 - March 23, 2013

Merle Pinnekamp , 60, a project manager for Eaton Corporation specialized in large industrial / government power projects including the Pentagon renovation, Capitol Power Plant and Johns Hopkins Hospital power distribution... died March 23,2013, at his home in Frederick, MD. He had been battling advanced metastasized prostate cancer for the last several years.

Mr. Pinnekamp was the second born son to John and Alice Pinnekamp born March 28, 1952 in Ida Grove, IA. He grew up milking cows on the family farm and attended Odebolt-Arthur Community school where he was academically strong, active in school sports and music. Mr. Pinnekamp 's interest in ham radio, TV/radio repair and electronics developed into attending Iowa State University where he became the first in the Pinnekamp family to get a college engineering degree.

Upon graduation Mr. Pinnekamp started his career in the electrical power construction industry. Initially working for Westinghouse Corporation in Omaha, Nebraska; his career took him to Asheville, North Carolina. In 1989 he left Westinghouse to work as a Field Service Manager for Magnetek in Milwaukee, Wisconsin where he met his current wife, Ellen. In 1998 he joined Eaton Corporation as a project manager in Chanhassen, Minnesota ultimately relocating to Frederick, Maryland in 2001. In 2010 Mr. Pinnekamp celebrated with pride 25yrs of combined service for Eaton / Westinghouse.

In the last 12 years Mr. Pinnekamp became active in the Catholic Church - singing in the choir. He was also introduced to barbershop accappella singing by his wife, started taking vocal lessons and singing vocal jazz. He set personal high standards of vocal performance. His passion for singing inspired the church parishioners. His participation in other vocal groups entertained audiences and forged friendships with other singers. Mr. Pinnekamp always smiled with pride as his daughter Molly showed her talent and interest in music playing piano, flute and guitar.

Mr. Pinnekamp will long be remembered for his courageous battles with cancer. He truly was a cancer fighter, a supportive inspiration for others, and an advocate for all those dealing with cancer. He will be remembered for his unusual sense of cancer humor, his grace and his acceptance. Mr. Pinnekamp's cancer battles began in 1977 with testicular cancer treated with surgery and radiation. Later in 2002 Mr. Pinnekamp was diagnosed with prostate and kidney cancer. These cancers were treated at Johns Hopkins. Unfortunately, the prostate cancer returned in 2004 and much of Mr. Pinnekamp's later cancer battles involved clinical trials and palliative care for the extensive bone metastases.

Survivors include a step daughter Barbara Shaffer Hall from his first marriage, his current wife Ellen of Frederick, MD, stepdaughter Sonya Nelson of Idaho Falls, ID, stepson Eric Nelson and his wife Victoria Nelson of Waukesha, WI, and daughter Molly of Frederick, MD. Also surviving is his mother Alice of Schaller, IA, brother Lyle Pinnekamp of Garner, IA and brother Dale Pinnekamp of Gallatin,TN. Mr. Pinnekamp was preceded in death by his older brother Curtis Pinnekamp and his father John Pinnekamp.

All are welcome to join the family for a memorial service to be held at St. Timothy Catholic Church 8651 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville, MD 21793, 301-845-8043 at 11:00 AM on March 27, 2013. The family will receive friends and guests at the church one hour prior to the Celebration of Life service. The service will be followed by a small reception in the church parish hall. Disposition of the ashes will be a private ceremony at the convenience of the family. There will also be a second mass held in Iowa at St. Paul Lutheran Church 402 East Third Street, Schaller, IA 51053 at 11:00 AM on April 5, 2013.

SERY, ELIZABETH MARY (NOLL) WALSTROM       January 7, 1948 - March 8, 2013

Elizabeth Mary (Noll) Walstrom Sery was born on January 7th, 1948 in Ida Grove, IA.

During her school years, Liz was very active in 4-H, church, and school activities. After graduating from Odebolt-Arthur High School (IA) in 1966, she attended the Minnesota School of Business and worked as a Legal Secretary for 40 years.

Liz was very devoted to the Al-Anon Family Groups. During her 41 years in Al-Anon, served as a District Representative and a Delegate to the Al-Anon World Service Board of Trustees and served 3 years as a member of the Executive CommitteE.

Liz passed away on March 8th, 2013 in Columbia Heights, Mn. at the age of 65 years. She is survived by her loving husband, Greg, and son Jeff and sisters Catherine (William) Litwinow of Bettendorf, IA, Barbara (Alan) Piper of Greenfield, IA and Margaret (Robert) Adams of Omaha, NE. She is also survived by eight nieces and nephews.

Visitation was Monday, March 11, 2013 at 9:00 a.m. with services at 11:00 a.m.  at Fridley United Methodist Church, Fridley, Minnesota.  There will be a private interment at a later date.


OXENDALE, BRUCE          December 7, 1948 - March 2, 2013

Bruce Oxendale, age 64, of Milan, Missouri, and formerly of Odebolt, Iowa, died Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Milan Health Care Center in Milan.

Graveside funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Odebolt Cemetery in Odebolt.

Bruce Dale Oxendale was born December 7, 1948, in Odebolt, Iowa, the son of Lawrence and Dorothy (Hansen) Oxendale.

He is survived by two sisters-in-law, Barbara Oxendale and Lori Oxendale, both of Milan, MO; several nieces and nephews, including Debbie Hoermann and Mark Oxendale of Milan, MO, Heather Oxendale of Trenton, MO, and Sharon Ness, Sheryl Ness, and Gary Oxendale, all of Minnesota; and several cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Doug, Roger, Keith, and Dennis Oxendale; two nephews, Rick and Kurt Oxendale; and a niece, Heidi Howe.

Bruce moved to Milan with his mother in 1995 from Odebolt, Iowa.  He was a member of Peace Lutheran Church in Milan.  He worked at High Hope in Milan until moving to Kansas City with his niece, Debbie Hoermann and family for two years.  He then returned to Milan.  Bruce liked western movies and talking to people.

DANIELSON, JOHN, SR.            May 18, 1938 - February 15, 2013

Funeral Services for John Danielson Sr., 74, of Jefferson will be 10:30 am Friday, February 15, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Jefferson. Interment will be in the Jefferson Cemetery, Jefferson, IA. Visitation will be after 11:00 am Thursday, February 14, 2013 at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home in Jefferson with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. An Elks Service will also be held at 7:30 pm Thursday at Slininger-Rossow Funeral Home.

John Alfred Danielson was born May 18, 1938 to Floyd and Velva Danielson in Kiron, Iowa. He died February 6, 2013 in Fredericksburg, Texas at the age of 74 years. John grew up in Kiron, Iowa and attended country school. He later attended school in Odebolt, Iowa.

On October 11, 1956, John was united in marriage to Shirley Marie Brookbank. They were blessed with five sons and one daughter: John, Larry, Bob, Tom, Rita, and Randy. John worked for Rex Chevrolet in Odebolt, Iowa before attending US Trade School in Kansas City, MO where he graduated as an Auto Mechanic. John then went to work for his uncle Bill at Lingston Garage in Kiron, Iowa. John later moved to Webster City, IA to work at Sherman Chevrolet before moving to Jefferson to work at Finch Chevrolet.

In 1970, John joined Skeeter Wilber to form the Wilber Danielson Garage and they worked together until Skeeter retired. John and his son John Jr. then formed Danielson Auto Service and they worked together until John Sr. retired in 2000. After retiring, John couldn’t sit still and he went to work farming with Roger Custer. He attended DMACC Semi Driving School in Ankeny, IA so he was able to haul the grain. In the spring you could find John in his John Deere tractor getting the fields ready for Roger to plant and when fall came it was time to get the semis out for Fall Harvest.

John always had a stack of maps by his chair and his bike ready to go in case someone wanted to travel north to Alaska or Nova Scotia or anywhere in the good U.S.A. As soon as the fall field work was done, John and Shirley were packed and ready to head south and become Texas snowbirds. John took his final 300 mile ride, from Gateway R.V. Park in Raymondville, TX to the Hill Country in Fredericksburg, TX. John was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Western Iowa Cycle Riders, South Texas Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club of Raymondville, TX, Greene County Sportsman’s Club, a Lifetime Member of the NRA, and Elks Lodge 2306.

John was preceded in death by his son Bob in 2003, his parents and grandparents. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Shirley of Jefferson, IA; his children: John Jr. (Barb) of Jefferson, IA, Larry (Irene) of Emmetsburg, IA, Tom (Cindy) of Jefferson, IA, Rita of Watertown, NY, and Randy (Tammy) of West Des Moines, IA; 25 grandchildren: Ashley, Rachael, Jeff, Staci, Marcus, Bridget, Todd, Wendy, Ted, Ashley, Taran, Shelby, Sara, Jamie, Whitney, Paige, Erin, Rich, Jenny, Christopher, Stephanie, Todd, Amanda, Lane, and Valeria; 10 great-grandchildren: Jordan, Diedrick, Eli, Rylee, Trevor, Trystin, Alexis, Maddie, Khloe, and Addilinne ; one great 98 year old aunt Edna of Wenatchee, WA; 3 brothers: Dean (Susan) of Denison, IA, Gary (Shirley) of Jefferson, IA, and Dale (Elsie) of Arthur, IA; one sister Myrna of Irving, TX; sister-in-law Sharon (Charlie) Ziegman of Wall Lake, IA; 4 brothers-in-law: Cork (Eileen) Brookbank of Ida Grove, IA, Marvin (Judi) Brookbank of Ida Grove, IA, Don (Kathy) Brookbank of Holstein, IA, and Harold (Kris) Brookbank of Tyler, TX; many nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends.



BENGFORD, THEODORE J.         May 3, 1938 - February 9, 2013

Theodore J. Bengford, 74, of Bolingbrook, IL, passed away Saturday, February 9, 2013 at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Melrose Park, IL. He was born May 3, 1938 in Odebolt, Iowa.

Ted was a U.S. Army veteran. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.  He will be truly missed.

He is survived by his wife, Alice Bengford; two sons, Michael Bengford, Barry Bengford; two great grandchildren, C.J. and Noah Bengford; three sisters, Madeline McTasney, Mary Jean Schiernbeck, Margie Jennett; four brothers, John Bengford, Ken Bengford, Tom Bengford, Norm Bengford; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bernard and Irma (Dinges) Bengford; two sisters, Alice Haffner, Loretta Bengford; three brothers, Norbert Bengford, Wilbert Bengford, Bernard Bengford.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 12, 2013 at The Daleiden Mortuary at 7:00 PM. Interment will be private.

SCHMIDT, VIOLA (NEUMANN)     June 13, 1920 - February 18, 2013

Viola Amelia Schmidt, age 92, of Odebolt, IA passed away on Monday, February 18, 2013 at Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center in Odebolt. Viola was born to John and Elsie (Nissen) Neumann on June 13, 1920, at home in rural Crawford County. She was baptized as an infant and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt. She attended a small one room school house in Kiron where she graduated in 1938.

On June 20, 1943 Viola was married to Arthur James Schmidt at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. They made their home near Odebolt. Two children were born to this union, Roland and Linda.

Viola loved being a farmer's wife and mother. Caring for her family and providing a comfortable home was always very important to her. She enjoyed crocheting, baking, word searches, quilting and crossword puzzles. She loved to watch her granddaughter playing softball and enjoyed riding the tractor with her son Roly as he farmed. She worked as a cook at the Odebolt Nursing Home for several years. Viola was an active member of her church and was involved in many activities and functions there.

Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter, Linda (Russ) Snygg of Ankeny; daughter-in-law Laurie Schmidt of Nemaha; special daughter Karen (Russ) Stebbins of Urbandale; granddaughter Sammy Snygg and fiancé Greg Gilg of Omaha; sister Betty Kuhlman of Mapleton; brother-in-law George Bieret of Wall Lake; many nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.

Viola was preceded in death by her parents John and Elsie Neumann; husband Arthur; son Roland Schmidt; brothers: Marvin, Jack and Donald Neumann; and sister LaVonne Bieret.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30pm on Monday, February 25, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Odebolt, Iowa.  The Reverend Glenn Hansen will officiate.  Inurnment will follow the service at the Odebolt Cemetery.  The Farber & Otteman Funeral Home in Odebolt is in charge of arrangements.

 


MEYER, WILLIAM C., JR.         May 6, 1927 - February 16, 2013

William C. "Bill" Meyer, Jr., age 85, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Saturday, February 16, 2013, at Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center in Odebolt.

 Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, February 19, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes, with burial to follow in Ferguson Cemetery in Lake View, Iowa.  Military honors will be conducted by the American Legion.  The Reverend Kevin Freese will officiate.  Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services. 

 Born May 6, 1927, in Irwin, Iowa, William Carl Meyer, Jr. was the son of William and Jessie (Buthman) Meyer.  He graduated from Irwin High School.

On September 7, 1950, Bill was united in marriage to Mary Ann Claussen.  They were blessed with two children, Jon (Sue) Meyer, and Gena (Curtis) Hill.  Both children live in Pleasant Hill, Iowa.  Bill has two grandchildren, Adam Meyer and Alana Hill.

Bill entered the United States Army on November 15, 1950.  As a Sergeant First Class he served nine months on the front line in Korea as a machine gunner.  He was honorably discharged on August 15, 1952.  Following the service, Bill and Mary Ann moved south of Sac City and farmed for 35 years.  Mary Ann died suddenly in 1989.

In 1996, Bill married Emma (Whalen) Babcock and moved to Odebolt, Iowa.  Emma currently resides at the Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center.  Bill has a stepson, Rick (Michelle) Babcock of Rochester, MN; four step-daughters, Becky (Pat) Reis of Odebolt, Cindy (Steve) Schramm of Auburn, LuAnn (Kirk) Marcum of Clarinda, and Marilyn Babcock of Ankeny; as well as many step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by a brother-in-law, Merle (Joan) Shannon of Sac City.

Bill enjoyed being with his family.  He also enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening, and taking bus tours.  He was a member of the American Legion for over 50 years.

In addition to his first wife, Bill was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Evelyn Wheeler and Berthelene Davis; and a son-in-law, Curtis Hill.  
 



MANDERNACH, SCOTT D.          July 21, 1969 - Feb 8, 2013

Scott D. Mandernach, age 43, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Friday, February 8, 2013, of injuries sustained in a snowmobiling accident in Cornucopia, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 12, 2013, at Faith Lutheran Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes.  The Reverend Trish Underberg will officiate, with burial to follow in the Odebolt Cemetery.  Visitation will be held at the church on Monday from 4-8 p.m., with the family present from 6-8 p.m. 

Born on his paternal grandparents' 27th wedding anniversary, July 21, 1969, Scott Dennis Mandernach was the son of Dennis Don and Toni Raye (Wallace) Mandernach.  He grew up and received his education in Odebolt, graduating from Odebolt-Arthur High School in 1988, then studied elevator management at Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge, Iowa.

On August 6, 1993, Scott married his "little sweetheart," Mindi Lovett, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, Iowa.  Three children, Karlie, Clayton, and Kacie, were born to this union.  With Mindi by his side as a full partner, Scott farmed and trucked in the Odebolt area and was a Latham seed corn dealer.  Farming was not simply a job to Scott, it was his passion.  He was dedicated to working the land and often placed custom farming jobs ahead of his own.  Scott will be remembered as a big man with an even bigger heart.      

A member of Faith Lutheran Church in Odebolt, Scott served as a 4-H leader and participated in the Sac County fair.  He enjoyed helping his kids with their 4-H projects, especially guiding them to raise their baby calves.  His new shih tzu puppy, Rocky, brought him much delight.

Among his favorite activities were camping, motorcycling, snowmobiling, golfing, and NASCAR racing.  Most of all, Scott loved his wife, Mindi, and their three children.  He loved life and had a knack for making even the worse chores fun.  He was passionate about whatever project he undertook and was always willing to lend a helping hand.

Survivors include his wife, Mindi; three children, Karlie, Clayton, and Kacie, all at home; his mother, Toni (Dennis) Werner of Chambers, NE; his father, Dennis (Diann) Mandernach of Galva; a sister, Kristy Rosemeyer and special friend Paul Arbegast of Arthur and her children Leah Carlson and special friend Dustin of Iowa City, Brianna (Ben) Butcher and son Beau of Holstein, and Royce Rosemeyer, at home; a brother, Trevor (Robin) Mandernach of Vermillion, SD and their children Lauren and Caiden; as well as several aunts, uncles, cousins, and other extended family members.  He is also survived by his father-in-law, Terry Lovett of Ida Grove; a sister-in-law, Kelli (Mike) Flemming of Vermillion, SD and children Austin and Alexis; and his grandparents-in-law, Bob and Roma Lovett, and Virginia Jensen, all of Ida Grove.

Scott was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Bill and Gloria Wallace; his paternal grandparents, Donald and Myrtle Mandernach; and his mother-in-law, Marilyn Lovett.


HILLMAN, CHARLES                  February 8, 1927 - February 6, 2013

Charles Hillmann, age 85, of Ida Grove, Iowa, died Saturday, February 2, 2013, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes.  The Reverends Richard Salcido and Adam Peck will officiate, with burial to follow in the Ida Grove Cemetery.  Military honors will be conducted by McNamara-Moore Post No. 364 of the American Legion.  Visitation with the family present will be held 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Ida Grove. 

Born February 8, 1927, in Odebolt, Iowa, Charles Dean Hillmann was the son of Ernest and Ethel (Holloway) Hillmann.  He attended country school and served in the Army Air Force during World War II.

On March 21, 1948, Charles was united in marriage to Lois Raymer in Ida County, Iowa.  The couple was blessed with five children, Eugene, Dennis, LaVonne, Cindy, and David.

Charles was employed with the Department of Transportation for 35 years.  He was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Ida Grove and McNamara-Moore Post No. 364 of the American Legion.  He was an avid gardener and also enjoyed fishing, camping and Sunday drives.  In later years he and Lois enjoyed wintering in Texas.

Survivors include four children, Eugene (Lynn) Hillmann of Elko, NV, LaVonne Stover and fiance Jeff Buria of Denison, Cindy Lorenzen of Ida Grove, and David (Becky) Hillmann of Milton, WI; 14 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.  Other survivors include two brothers-in-law, Howard Raymer of Downey, CA, and Robert Mohr of Cushing; as well as several nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife Lois in 2010; a son, Dennis; a great-grandchild, Jett Lorenzen; a daughter-in-law, Donna Hillmann; two brothers, Victor and Duane Hillmann; and a sister, Bernetta Bailey.


MANDERNACH, EARL J.        March 7, 1926 - January 21, 2013     
      
Earl J. Mandernach, 86, of Onawa, Iowa, passed away suddenly on January 21, 2013 at Burgess Health Center in Onawa.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Odebolt United Methodist Church with Pastor DeeAnn Klapp, Pastor Dennis Burns, and Ruth Mandernach, Earl's daughter-in-law, officiating. Military services provided by the Roose American Legion Post #313 of Odebolt. Burial will follow in the Storm Lake Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 – 8:00 P.M. Friday, January 25, 2013 at the Rush Family Chapel in Onawa with a prayer service at 7:00 P.M. Arrangements are under the direction of Rush Family Care Service in Onawa.

Earl was born in Buena Vista County, Iowa on March 7, 1926, as the youngest child to Earl B. and Clara Mandernach. He graduated from Storm Lake High School. After high school he joined the United States Air Force and served in Europe during World War II. He married Bonnie M. Murray on November 26, 1947 in Storm Lake.

In 1949, the couple moved to Odebolt where they purchased the Gambles Store and later the Ford garage. In 1967, they moved to a farm near Battle Creek. In 1969, Earl acquired a farm in South Dakota. In 1973, they moved to Selby, South Dakota. Earl and Bonnie subsequently moved to Mobridge, S.D., Sioux City, Moville, Danbury, and back to Battle Creek. Bonnie passed away on June 28, 2000. Earl then returned to "Mandernach Drive" in Odebolt and then Premier Estates Assisted Living in Onawa.

Earl was a true salesman and enjoyed negotiating deals throughout his life. Earl always had something for sale for the right price.

He was a member of the Roose American Legion Post #313 of Odebolt and served as a trustee at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Martha and Duane Wasmund of Onawa, IA and Sara and Joe Lane of Mapleton, IA; two sons and their wives, Leslie and Janice Mandernach of Selby, S.D. and William and Ruth Mandernach of Valley Glen, CA; fifteen grandchildren; seventeen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Clara; wife Bonnie; a sister Dorothy Anderson and brother-in-law Russell Anderson; two brothers, Laverne who died in infancy and Raymond and sister-in-law Irene; and his close friend and brother-in-law, Robert (Bob) Voelschow.




FINERAN, LOIS                       June 24, 1941 - January 22, 2013

Lois Fineran, age 71, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Stewart Memorial Community Hospital in Lake City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 27, 2013, at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes.  The Reverend Dan Greving will officiate, with private family burial in St. Rose of Lima Catholic Cemetery in Denison, Iowa.  Visitation with the family present will be held at Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt on Saturday from 2-5 p.m. 

Born June 24, 1941, in Crawford County, Iowa, Lois Eileen Fineran was the daughter of L. Emmett and Catherine (Henkelman) Fineran.  As a young girl, Lois became a resident of Glenwood State School in Glenwood, Iowa.  In recent years she made her home at Opportunity Living in Lake City until moving to Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center.

Survivors include her siblings and their spouses, Keith (Deb) Fineran of Arthur, Kenneth (Sandie) Fineran of Norfolk, NE, Bob (Leah) Fineran of Ida Grove, Randy (Pippa) Fineran of Arthur, Sandi Grote of Sioux City, Barbara (Jack) Milner of Arthur, and Carolyn (Stan) Mortensen of Wall Lake; three aunts, Alice (Vern) Scheel of Wilmington, IL, Rita Cruse of Fremont, NE, and Helen Henkelman of Odebolt; an uncle, Gerald Fineran of Denison; as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, James and John Fineran; her grandparents, James and Sarah Fineran and George and Cunnigunda Henkelman; and many aunts and uncles.

LINDSKOOG, RUBY (MAURITZ)              May 21, 1921 - January 21, 2013

Ruby Lindskoog, age 91, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Monday, January 21, 2013, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove, Iowa.

Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 26, 2013, at the First Baptist Church in Kiron, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes.  The Reverend Bruce Kaihoi will officiate, with burial to follow in the Odebolt Cemetery, Odebolt, Iowa.  Visitation with the family present will be 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Christensen-Huffman Funeral Home in Odebolt. 

Born May 21, 1921, on her parents' farm in Crawford County, Iowa, Ruby Maydelle Lindskoog was the daughter of Elmer and Florence (Lindberg) Mauritz.  She received her early education at Otter Creek No. 6 country school and graduated from Kiron High School in 1938.  Following graduation, she worked for Mrs. W.P. Adams of Odebolt.

On July 5, 1942, Ruby was united in marriage to Wayne Lindskoog at her parents' home in rural Kiron, Iowa.  They made their home on a farm near Odebolt until moving into town.

Ruby was an active member of the Odebolt Covenant Church until it closed, after which she returned to the Kiron Baptist Church which she attended during her childhood.

Survivors include two children and their spouses, Dennis and Cynthia Lindskoog of Odebolt, and Marlys and Mark Conner of Glidden; four grandchildren, Lori (Steve) Mattes of Newton, Brett (Andra) Lindskoog of Odebolt, Jill (Paul) Fox of Chaska, MN, and Abby (Whitney) White of Ames; nine great-grandchildren, Adam, Caleb, Micah, and Brennan Mattes, Brynn, Blaire, and Alec Lindskoog, Grayson Fox, and Conner White; a brother and his wife, Ron and Ellen Mauritz of Cheyenne, WY; a sister-in-law, Helen Mauritz of Kiron; and several nieces and nephews.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents; husband Wayne in March, 2012; an infant sister, Marilyn; and a brother, Delmar Mauritz.


SWANSON, LINDA RAE (OLSON)          July 10, 1943 - January 21, 2013

Linda Rae Swanson, 69, of Boxholm passed away surrounded by her family Monday, January 21, 2013 at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames.

She was born July 10, 1943 in Storm Lake, Iowa, the daughter of Lake W. and Irene E. (Anderson) Olson. She married Charles D. Swanson on May 15, 1971 at United Methodist Church in Odebolt, IA.

Linda retired from nursing to raise her family, after serving 15 years as head nurse and later as a relief supervisor at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge. She also worked for Krakau Insurance Agency in Boxholm for several years following her retirement. She attended Boyer country school through the 6th grade, and graduated from Odebolt-Arthur High School with the class of 1961. She went on to attend the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing in Sioux City where she obtained her nursing degree in 1964.

Linda's family was her life's passion and she was an avid supporter of her children throughout school and sports activities. Linda always looked forward to the holidays and special occasions when her family could be together. After Charles's father Reuben passed away, Linda took her mother-in-law to her appointments and school activities watching her grandchildren. She enjoyed being the "town nurse" and "community chauffeur" for church and other ladies activities. When her parents entered a nursing home she faithfully tried to visit them weekly. Linda embraced the blessing of being a Grandma and had a very special place in her heart for her grandchildren. 

Linda was a very active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Boxholm, serving as a current council member. She also held several leadership roles with women's groups, Vacation Bible School, and was one of the leaders for the church's long running Swedish Supper meal.

Survivors include her husband Charles D. Swanson of Boxholm; two sons, Erik C. Swanson and wife Tara of Omaha, NE and Paul W. Swanson and wife Emily of Winchester, IL; mother Irene Olson of Odebolt; sister Betty J. Sullivan and her husband James of Ft. Dodge; three grandchildren Aaron, Presley and Chandler Swanson all of Winchester, IL and nieces and nephews, Stephen, Stefanie, Kellie, Daniel, Sheila, Shelly, and Sue. She was preceded in death by her father, and grandparents Paul and Esther Anderson.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m., Friday, January 25, 2013, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Boxholm. Pastor Rod Meyer will officiate. Burial will be at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Boxholm. TIEFENTHALER, JANICE M.   July 20, 1935 - January 4, 2013

Services for Janice M. Tiefenthaler, 77, or Holstein, formerly of Galva, were Jan. 8, 2013, at Our Lady of Good Counsel Catholic Church in Holstein with the Rev. Richard D. Ball officiating.  Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Holstein.  Nicklas D. Jensen Funeral Home in Holstein was in charge of arrangements.

Jan Tiefenthaler was born July 20, 1935 to Alice (Otto) and Jerome Bruening of Carroll, Iowa.  She graduated from Lake City High School in 1953.  Jan then attended Iowa State Teacher College in Cedar Falls, Iowa, where she graduated with a two-year elementary teaching degree.  She put her degree to use in Odebolt, Iowa in 1955 where she taught at the 2nd grade level for three years.  During that time she met Leonard Tiefenthaler of Odebolt and the couple were married on December 28, 1957 at St. Martins Church in Odebolt.  Jan and Leonard were blessed with six children.

Janice enjoyed camping, playing cards, dancing, making quilts and was an excellent cook.  She loved spending time with family and friends.  She was a member of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, where she was a CCD teacher.  Jan belonged to several card clubs and the Good Sam’s Camping Group.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard; her parents; her parents-in-law, Martha and Herbert Tiefenthaler; sister and brother-in-law, Susan and Jim Demmon; brothers-in-law, James Moore, Don Schwaller and Bob Tiefenthaler; and great-grandson, Elliot Jordan.

Survivors include her children, Sandy (Steve) Alley of Absarokee, MT, Steve (Lynette) Tiefenthaler of Holstein, IA, Laurie (John) Lawson of Spencer, IA, John (Shelly) Tiefenthaler of Holstein, IA, Tim (Mary) Tiefenthaler of Red Oak, IA and Tony (Susan) Tiefenthaler of Springview, NE; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marlene (Ron) Feilmeyer, Barbara Moore, Margaret (Dave) Reinhart, Pat (Gary) Delong; brother, Tom (Bev) Bruening; sisters-in-law, Verna Mae Schwaller, Thelma (Darrell) Schroeder, Karen (Neil) Johnson, Kathy (Tom) Kros and Phyll Tiefenthaler.  She will be missed by all of her family and friends.

FERIN, MICHAEL JOHN          July 15, 1940 - January 2, 2013

Michael (Mike) John Ferin, 72, of Indianapolis and formerly of Odebolt, passed away in Indianapolis, IN after a short battle with lung cancer. Born July 16, 1940 to Mary and Albert Ferin in Des Moines, Iowa, Mike is preceded in death by both parents and his brother Larry Ferin (Ankeny, IA). Mike is survived by his wife of 50 years Jane (Leonard) Ferin of New Palestine, IN, his three children, Mark Ferin (Wildwood, MO), Michelle Ferin Hoffman and Doug Hoffman (Bloomington, IN), Amy Ferin Snelling and Chris Snelling (Tecumseh, MI), and grandchildren Lauren and Tyler Ferin, Rachel, Sarah and Sophia Hoffman, and Eliza, Emma and Ava Snelling.

Mike was a passionate extrovert, who could speak on any subject, often making converts to his views. Mike’s joy of life and gift of expressive chat was shared with all who joined him at the tee box, in the fishing boat, around the dinner table, exploring nature with his beloved grandchildren, or at the cribbage board. He left an indelible mark on all the hearts he touched.

Mike's storied and lengthy career came full circle as an educator; first, as a high school history teacher in Milwaukee, WI and last, as a substitute teacher in New Palestine, IN. During the thirty plus years in-between, he enjoyed a highly successful career fundraising for a number of prestigious universities (the most recent being the University of Indianapolis).

Mike was quick to volunteer and served others through his work with at Fairbanks, and the National and local Democratic Party, among others.

Visitation will be Saturday, January 5, 2013 at GH Hermann Madison Avenue Funeral Home, 5141 Madison Ave, Indianapolis, IN 46227 from 12:30 to 3:00 with a service following at 3:00 pm.

A graveside service will take place in Odebolt, Iowa where Mike will be laid to rest.

THOMPSON, HARRIS "TINY"        December 16, 1925 - January 1, 2013

Harris "Tiny" Thompson, age 87, of Odebolt, Iowa, died Tuesday, January 1, 2013, at the Odebolt Nursing & Rehab Center.

Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 5, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Odebolt, Iowa, under the direction of Christensen-Huffman Funeral Homes. The Reverend Dee Ann Klapp will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday in the Odebolt Cemetery. Born December 16, 1925, in Ida County, Iowa, Harris Theodore "Tiny" Thompson was the son of Alvin and Mabel (Linhult) Thompson. He received his education in Ida Grove, graduating from Ida Grove High School in 1943.

On July 10, 1949, Harris was united in marriage to Mary Jeanne Meyer at the Odebolt Methodist Church. The couple farmed north of Odebolt in Clinton Township for many years. They moved into Odebolt in 1988.

Tiny was a member of the United Methodist Church in Odebolt. He enjoyed golfing, fishing, hunting, and jigsaw puzzles. He also enjoyed buying and selling cattle.

Survivors include four sons, David (Susan) Thompson of Fort Dodge, Chuck (Pam) Thompson of Bloomington, IN, Tim Thompson of Odebolt, and Todd (Teri) Thompson of Ames; eight grandchildren, Nathan, Katelyn, and Brent Thompson, Sarah (Carter) Figg, Tayli, Ty, Josh (Krista), and Tasha Thompson; and a great-granddaughter, Aubrey Thompson.
